Fans of historical dramas will soon be able to experience yet another one in a brand-new way. Movie history is filled with so many different epic historical films, from Gladiator and Braveheart to Troy and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. More recently, moviegoers have had the chance to experience The Woman King, 1917 and Gladiator II, among others.

Another recent historical drama is The Uprising, which was just released in theaters on September 10 and stars Andrew Garfield as Ploughman, a poor farmer who takes part in a rebellion against King Richard II in the 14th century after a tax increase. The story is based on the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Garfield’s co-stars include Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Stephen Dillane, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Cosmo Jarvis, Woody Norman, Stanley Townsend and Katherine Waterston. Paul Greengrass directed the film and wrote the script.

The Uprising Is Getting An Expansive New Release In November

After being in theaters for less than three weeks, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment just announced that The Uprising will be available to buy on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on November 3; the 4K version is a two-disc combo pack collector’s edition. Bonus features include eight deleted scenes and the behind-the-scenes featurettes Authentically Historic: The Cast of The Uprising, Envisioning An Uprising and Creating 1381 England.

Fans don’t have to wait until November to watch The Uprising at home, though. As of September 29, the film can be purchased and rented on digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango.

The Andrew Garfield Film Came With A Unique Historical Twist

The Uprising may be based on the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt, a real historical event, but there’s also a connection to a folklore legend, as a shocking twist reveals the film is actually an origin story for the outlaw Robin Hood, with Garfield’s character stepping into that role. Ahead of its theatrical release, Focus Features briefly promoted The Uprising with the subtitle The Rise of Robin Hood. Unfortunately, that clever marketing stunt wasn’t enough to lure in audiences, though, as the film only grossed $7.76 million at the box office.

Critics were very mixed on the quality of The Uprising, which earned a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some reviewers called the historical drama engaging and gritty with a standout performance from Garfield, while others called out its many flaws. Some major names are attached to this film, like Jason Bourne‘s Greengrass as director, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum as a producer and Spider-Man‘s Garfield as the star, but it wasn’t enough to become a theatrical hit. The Uprising is now getting a second chance at developing an audience with its upcoming physical release.
