Godzilla has a staggering cinematic legacy, with the King of the Monsters starring in dozens of movies over the decades. Now, his 40th film, Godzilla Minus Zero, is set to arrive this November. But with so many entries sharing similar premises and genre conventions, individual movies can blur together, sometimes even leading to Godzilla fatigue among fans. But for fans looking for something truly unlike anything the franchise has delivered before, Godzilla’s crossover with a 126-year-old classic offers a masterful intervention that breathes fresh life into the legendary monster.
On October 7, 2026, IDW Publishing released Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: The Kaiju of Oz, the latest installment in the comic publisher’s line of oversized, standalone comics that reimagine famous works of literature with Godzilla thrown into the middle of the story. Notable entries in this line include Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla, Godzilla’s The Odyssey, and Roar of the Worlds, all of which were released in 2026 and respectively reimagined William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Homer’s The Odyssey, and H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds.
While the above titles were fantastic, the latest entry, The Kaiju of Oz, has proven itselfa true masterpiece. Brought to life by superstar artist Ryan Browne (8 Billion Genies, Lucky Devils, Curse Words) and writer Mike Costa (Venom, Spider-Verse), the comic masterfully reimagines L. Frank Baum’s 1900 classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by bringing the beloved cast of Oz face-to-face with the King of the Monsters.
The Kaiju of Oz Is The BEST Godzilla Crossover In YEARS (Our Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: The Kaiju of Oz #1 is best described as a chaotic, toe-tickling delight that will have you laughing out loud. The one-shot is packed with action and humor, from incredible one-liners and epic subversions of expectations to visually stunning artwork that not only delights the eyes but also enhances the overall tone and atmosphere of the story.
The story is ridiculous, abundantly silly, and pure cinema all rolled into one. While anyone can jump into this story, we recommend having read or watched The Wizard of Oz at least once beforehand, as it will make the reading experience even more enjoyable. For one, familiarity with the characters will give readers a greater appreciation for the ways Mike Costa subverts expectations and twists the original narrative. Secondly, knowing the source material will allow fans to pick up on the references and appreciate how cleverly the comic incorporates humor.
This was truly a masterclass in crossovers and goes to show how even the most unexpected, genre-defying mashups can be pulled off flawlessly with the right creative team. Going into this story, Screen Rant was mildly skeptical, not yet seeing the genius of dropping Godzilla into the Land of Oz. However, after reading the entire 48-page one-shot, we had only one complaint: it wasn’t longer.
The Kaiju of Oz is the type of story we would happily read dozens more pages of. However, it does end in a great place, and we were left satisfied. Wanting more is, of course, just our greediness talking. In fact, we would love to see this crossover get a movie of its own. While a live-action adaptation might be out of the question, an animated Godzilla x The Wizard of Oz movie would be epic.
Welcome to the Wonderful Land of Oz — where houses fall from the sky, scarecrows and tin men come to life, witches rule from specific compass directions, and… Godzilla reigns supreme?! That’s right, Godzilla is finally coming to Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and once it’s here, every land will be Munchkinland. Maybe the Cowardly Lion was on to something.
