Ted Lasso has just gone through the end of an era on Apple TV, but the show is likely to recover from that in the future. Ted Lasso became one of Apple TV’s most popular shows ever throughout its initial three seasons. While fans, actors, and creatives initially thought that Ted Lasso season 3’s ending would also serve as the final stop for the sports comedy series, that did not happen. Ted Lasso season 4 reinvented the hit show, shining the spotlight on the AFC Richmond women’s soccer team, aka the Lady Greyhounds. Ted Lasso season 4 debuted on August 5.
As was the case for the first three seasons of the Apple TV series — though season 1 had a three-episode premiere — Ted Lasso season 4 followed a weekly release schedule for its new episodes. This allowed Apple TV to stretch the returning hit series’ streaming run for a couple of months, with the Ted Lasso season 4 finale, “Being Alive,” having dropped recently, on October 7. Now, Ted Lasso has gone through the end of a successful era on Apple TV’s charts, and that is not only related to the fact that there are no more season 4 episodes left to air.
Ted Lasso Has Lost Its #1 Crown
According to data from FlixPatrol, Ted Lasso is no longer the most-watched movie or TV show on Apple TV’s overall top 10 chart (from Amazon Channels). The United States ranking now has John Cena’s new action hit, Matchbox: The Movie, as the #1 release on the Apple TV chart. Matchbox was released on Apple TV on October 9, arriving on the streaming service just two days after the Ted Lasso season 4 finale dropped on the streamer. While that did end Ted Lasso‘s dominant run on Apple TV’s overall chart (from Amazon Channels), the sports comedy series still reigns supreme elsewhere.
Given how Cena’s Matchbox is a movie, when it comes to Apple TV’s US Top 10 TV Shows chart, Ted Lasso continues to stand tall as the streaming service’s most-watched series right now. That chart also includes other multi-season Apple TV shows like Ted Lasso, such as the hit spy thriller Slow Horses, the mind-bending multiverse series Dark Matter, the dystopian sci-fi Silo, the emotional Shrinking, the energetic crime series Your Friends & Neighbors, and more. At the time of writing, Ted Lasso is also the most-watched TV show on Apple TV in 78 countries, per FlixPatrol.
What Does The Future Hold For The Hit Series?
Apple TV has yet to officially renew Ted Lasso for season 5. However, given season 4’s strong performance three years after the sports comedy series’ previous season had been released, with fans as excited about the show’s future as ever, it is hard to picture Apple TV not moving forward with new Ted Lasso episodes.
On that note, series star Jason Sudeikis previously talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how the show’s creators had plans for at least seasons 5 and 6 to fulfill another three-season arc. Ted Lasso season 4 might be facing the end of an era on streaming, but the show is still very much alive going forward.
