One of my favorite things about Final Fantasy as a series is that there’s so much scope for what it can be. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed classic fantasy, grimy near-future dystopias, steampunk worlds of wonder, and even a (relatively) grounded modern-day setting in Final Fantasy 15. The fact all of these different worlds are always unmistakably still Final Fantasy is part of the magic to me.
With Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 coming out in the near future, attention will soon turn to Final Fantasy 17. The last mainline game in the series, of course, took things back to the classic swords and sorcery approach, so what exactly can we expect from the 17th numbered entry in this iconic franchise?
It’s a question that’s still being debated by gamers everywhere, and there are some very interesting answers out there. One gamer on Reddit has suggested we should get a Final Fantasy game set in space, which I could actually totally see. A whole new cast of characters sailing out among the stars, traveling to different planets. Give me a Chocobo wearing a space helmet and I can die happy.
“SPACE. I want space,” enthuses this Reddit user. “We never had Final Fantasy Space. But not high-tech space like Star Trek, but rather magical space. A galaxy of magic where you can hop between planets on a mission to defeat Evil Eidolon ATOMOS the all-devouring.”
The general consensus certainly seems to be that after the fantasy trappings of Final Fantasy 16, we’re due another futuristic (or near-futuristic) Final Fantasy game.
“I expect it to be a turn-based/action RPG hybrid,” another fan added in a separate thread. “The RPG mechanics will be more robust than XVI. There will be a real party, but it will be small (3-4) with the occasional side character that temporarily joins up. We’ll be returning to a cyberpunk setting. Less dark in tone than XVI or even VII. Vibrant color palette. Releasing 2031. Will receive mixed reviews from fans, excellent reviews from critics. Won’t be considered beloved until 2044ish.”
Personally, I plan to bookmark this one and come back to it in 2031. If they were right, I’ll be asking them for the lottery numbers.
There are a few other neat ideas being thrown around by fans. One suggested a Western setting, which could be pretty cool. Others pitched Victorian Steampunk, prehistoric, and underwater… although I’m pretty sure we could just have underwater as one section of a game, rather than the entire game.
For now, we have a long way to go before Final Fantasy 17 is with us. But it’s always fun to imagine the possibilities, and the potential.

Final Fantasy is Square Enix’s flagship fantasy RPG franchise and one of gaming’s defining anthology series. Created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the property spans standalone mainline games, direct sequels, spin-offs, films, anime, and live-action adaptations, with each major entry introducing a new world, new heroes, and a new conflict while preserving recurring franchise DNA. Across decades, Final Fantasy has built its identity around ambitious storytelling, technological leaps, and a willingness to reinvent itself without losing its core sense of wonder.
