The Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) 2026-27 season got underway with an impressive batting display from South Australia against Victoria at Junction Oval. Tahlia McGrath produced a commanding century under pressure, turning a difficult start into a competitive total and immediately putting her side in a strong position in the opening clash.

South Australia were tested early in their innings as Victoria’s bowling attack made it difficult for the visitors to build momentum. Barsby contributed a composed half-century, scoring 50 from 71 balls to help McGrath build a crucial partnership. The partnership allowed South Australia to move away from their early difficulties and establish a platform for a strong finish. McGrath’s outstanding contribution ultimately helped South Australia finish their 50 overs on 290/7. From being under pressure early in the innings, the visitors managed to put together a sizeable total thanks largely to their captain’s remarkable effort. Victoria’s bowling attack was led by Annabel Sutherland, who finished with three wickets for 60 runs from her 10 overs. Despite taking regular wickets, Victoria could not prevent McGrath from controlling the innings for a significant period.

The 154-run knock therefore became the defining performance of the opening match of the WNCL season. McGrath not only anchored South Australia’s recovery but also provided the innings with the acceleration required to push the team towards the 300-run mark. With the new WNCL season now underway, McGrath’s century has given South Australia a significant early boost and provided a strong reminder of her ability to influence a game with the bat when her team needs it most.
