England have suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, with Jos Buttler ruled out of the 50-overs battle due to injury. The wicketkeeper-batter picked up the issue during England’s recent ODI series against Sri Lanka and was subsequently forced to miss the third match. His absence leaves England without one of their most experienced white-ball players for an important assignment involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Jos Buttler set to miss England’s tour of Pakistan

Buttler sustained the injury during the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley, bringing his participation in the series to an early end. The England star was then ruled out of the third ODI, and the latest update confirms that he will also miss the upcoming tri-series in Pakistan.

England’s white-ball coach Brendon McCullum provided an update on Buttler’s recovery while confirming that the 35-year-old will not travel to Pakistan with the team.

“Jos won’t be in Pakistan,” McCullum said, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the wicketkeeper-batter’s return date.

McCullum also highlighted Buttler’s professionalism and fitness, suggesting that the England camp expects the experienced player to do everything possible to make a swift recovery.

“We know he’s an incredible athlete, we know he’s supremely fit and an ultra-professional, so he’ll do everything he can to get back as soon as possible, but it’s hard to judge how long that will be,” he added.

With no definite timeframe placed on Buttler’s return, England will now have to manage the tri-series without one of their key white-ball performers.

Brendon McCullum reveals who will replace Buttler

In Buttler’s absence, England have decided to give Jordon Cox an opportunity behind the stumps during the Pakistan tri-series. McCullum confirmed that Cox will get his chance after spending several years impressing in domestic cricket. The England coach also pointed out that injuries had previously disrupted Cox’s progress when he was close to earning an opportunity at the international level.

“Cox will definitely get the opportunity in Pakistan,” McCullum revealed.

The England coach was particularly complimentary about Cox’s ability and character, describing him as a popular member of the dressing room and someone who has consistently performed well in different situations.

“He’s done really well domestically for a number of years and he’s been unlucky with injuries when he’s been on the cusp previously. He’s deserved it,” McCullum explained.

The tri-series now presents Cox with a significant opportunity to establish himself in England’s ODI setup. With Buttler unavailable, the wicketkeeper-batter will be expected to take on greater responsibility during the Pakistan assignment. McCullum believes Cox has plenty of potential and sees a bright future ahead for the England player.

“He’s a good lad with a huge amount of runway in front of him in his career,” McCullum added further.
