Fallout 5 Gets Official Release Update From Bethesda

Given just how popular Fallout is as a franchise right now, it really must come as quite a disappointment to the millions of fans out there that there isn’t another game for them to play on the immediate horizon. Much of Bethesda’s capacity is understandably taken up by the monumental task of getting The Elder Scrolls VI into players’ hands as soon as possible, and that leaves Fallout on something of a backburner for the time being.

Things are changing above them all the time as well, after Xbox made several major moves designed to give their larger companies control of some of the most iconic franchises under their stewardship. With all of that doubt, it can be difficult to know exactly what’s going on, but it does seem as though we have a vague timeline about when to expect the next big game in the single-player series.

In case you missed it (as reported by GameRant), Bethesda gave an extremely lengthy update, by their standards, over on social media, where they let fans know about all of their major games and how far along exactly they are. Within that, they described Fallout 5 as their “long-term destination,” and with it only being in pre-production, we aren’t going to see much of it within the next few years, and we likely won’t be playing the full thing until around 2030.

Given that many still placed the timeline of The Elder Scrolls VI as releasing somewhere around 2028, it would be astounding to see Fallout 5 drop within a couple of years of that. That will undoubtedly come as a major disappointment to those who prioritize the post-apocalyptic series over everything else.

In slightly more encouraging news, that doesn’t mean we won’t have anything to do in the meantime, as the statement also confirmed the upcoming release of remakes for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. These will likely be similar in style to the recent Oblivion remaster and they will be a lot easier to produce in a timely manner, meaning we’ll almost certainly see both of those before Fallout 5 debuts.

At the same time, we also know that Obsidian is actively working on a game tied to the universe, and they have now been placed as a distinct team working directly under Bethesda, as part of the aforementioned moves made by Xbox as a whole.

If all else fails, we also have the excellent Prime Video adaptation of Fallout to enjoy, with the third season of that coming next year. The show has already had far-reaching consequences for the lore as a whole, and it will be interesting to see where it takes us next, particularly with the Ghoul headed to Colorado, which many see as a potential setting for the next game.
