CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opens up on his struggling performances in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has witnessed its fair share of drama, but few storylines have been as poignant as the dip in form of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. On Tuesday night at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the sea of yellow finally had something to celebrate as CSK clinched a commanding 32-run victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). While the win propelled CSK to the eighth spot on the points table, it also provided the backdrop for a rare moment of vulnerability from their leader. For the first time this season, Gaikwad opened up about the mental toll his horrendous form has taken on him, offering fans a glimpse into the pressure of leading a franchise while struggling for personal rhythm.

Following the clinical defense of 192, a visibly relieved Gaikwad addressed the elephant in the room. The opening batter, known for his elegant strokeplay and calm demeanor, admitted that the string of low scores had begun to seep into his psychological space.

“I felt it was getting into my head even when I was batting,” Gaikwad confessed during the post-match presentation. He noted that the win over KKR served as a psychological reset, allowing him to feel “calmer and more confident” again.

Despite his personal struggles, Gaikwad emphasized his commitment to the team’s needs. He credited his teammates for stepping up during his lean patch, mentioning that the burden has been significantly eased by the collective effort. The skipper remains optimistic, asserting that ‘a big knock is just around the corner’ and that he is mentally prepared to deliver when the stakes are highest. His ability to maintain a positive outlook while acknowledging his flaws has resonated with the CSK faithful, who view this transparency as a hallmark of his growing leadership.

I think, good to be on the winning side after a long time. I felt it was getting into my head even when I was batting, but after the last game, I felt a bit relaxed. I feel I’m feeling really good. Just make sure that you do whatever the team needs, whatever the situation needs. And I feel even mentally, I’m feeling really well, feeling positive, and just a big, a big knock is just around the corner, but as long as the other guys are just covering up for me, definitely I’ll do it when it’s needed,” he added.

CSK captain’s lean run in 5 games: A statistical deep dive

The numbers for Gaikwad in IPL 2026 tell a stark tale of a batsman searching for his timing. In five innings, the CSK captain has managed a meagre 63 runs at an average of 12.60. His strike rate, usually hovering in the high 130s, has dipped to 105.0, highlighting his difficulty in finding the boundary during the powerplay. His scores this season, 6, 28, 7, 15, and 7, indicate a consistent inability to convert starts or navigate the early movement of the new ball.

In the match against KKR, Gaikwad fell for just 7 runs off 6 balls, undone by an attempted slog-sweep off Anukul Roy that found the fielder at deep mid-wicket. However, while the captain struggled, the rest of the unit flourished. Sanju Samson (48 off 32) and Dewald Brevis (41 off 29) provided the necessary impetus, while a sensational 3-wicket haul from Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad ensured KKR remained winless. Gaikwad’s tactical acumen was on full display as he rotated his bowlers, including Akeal Hosein and Anshul Kamboj to perfection, proving that while his bat may be quiet, his captaincy remains as sharp as ever.
