Constantine Is Coming To HBO Max

Constantine, the underrated comic book adaptation starring Keanu Reeves, is making its way to HBO Max at the right time. Released in February 2005, and loosely based on the Hellblazer series by DC Comics, the supernatural superhero film featured Reeves as the titular exorcist John Constantine. He has the ability to travel between Earth and Hell, communicating with angels and demons as their true selves.

Directed by Frank Lawrence, with Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello writing the screenplay, Constantine was generally well-received. It grossed more than $230 million at the box office, with a reputation that has only grown in the two decades since it first hit theaters. Over the past year, Reeves and Lawrence have both talked about how Constantine 2 is closer than ever.

Now, just in time to join other DC movies on the platform, Constantine will be coming to HBO Max on January 1st. It will be a welcome addition since the superhero movie is currently not available on any streaming platform in the U.S.

The news of Constantine coming to HBO Max follows comments by DC Films co-CEO James Gunn about the chances of a sequel to the 2005 cult favorite. Gunn revealed that he’s had discussions about Constantine 2, including conversations with Reeves, and that he respects the people involved. However, he added that he hasn’t yet read a script for the project, which has been in development for several years.

In terms of what Reeves has said, the John Wick star noted that the plan for the sequel is to be set in the same world as its predecessor, focusing ongreater challenges for John Constantine. Lawrence echoed these remarks, sharing his view that the long-awaited follow-up film is closer than it’s ever been to becoming a reality after years of working on the chapter that comes after the Constantine ending.

With both Reeves and Lawrence striking optimistic tones about the chances of revisiting the 2005 film, it’s a great chance for viewers to both rediscover and enjoy for the first time the Constantine cast that includes Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare.

It will potentially give viewers a newer chance to assess why it is that the supernatural saga has seen its esteem increase significantly after a relatively more mixed initial response. And if the sequel does officially move forward, with casting and concrete story details, Constantine‘s presence on a major streaming platform will be a boost.
