Confirmation, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Though The Testaments season 1 ended with the simmering of a rebellion in the air, and with the Hulu hit returning for another season in Gilead, there are already questions about what’s to come next. During the lead up to The Testaments season 1, it wasn’t clear if the spinoff to The Handmaid’s Tale would work. Despite the material coming from another successful Margaret Atwood novel, The Testaments felt like it may be coming too soon on the heels of its predecessors end. After years of The Handmaid’s Tale that felt like they dragged on, a spinoff didn’t feel necessary.

Thankfully, The Testaments season 1 has been able to prove itself and ensure that viewers are locked into the series. While the show, which brings over Handmaid’s Tale stars like Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, follows a whole new generation of girls in Gilead, it has enough ties to the original series to feel resonant. Paving its own way, The Testaments took lessons from The Handmaid’s Tale, skillfully avoiding some of the major pitfalls of the previous series. Working on tighter pacing and sharper storytelling, The Testaments season 1 opened itself up to bring viewers into an exciting, dark world.

With The Testaments season 1 having come to a close, the seeds of something major are hanging in the air as the series moves into its second season. While there’s going to be some time between the seasons, there’s already a lot to know about Hulu’s The Testaments season 2.

The Testaments Has Been Renewed For Season 2

After years of The Handmaid’s Tale, the idea of The Testaments felt like a lot to take on for the streamer. While Handmaid’s was a success in its early seasons, the show drew out for a long stretch that left viewers less and less interested as time went on. When the series came to a close, there was a sense of relief that the door was finally shut on the world of Gilead, but The Testaments was announced quickly thereafter. While the show hasn’t been for everyone, it’s done a lot of work to stand out from its predecessor.

Although there was some worry that The Testaments season 2 wouldn’t make it to Hulu’s lineup, the streaming platform was pleased to announce the series would be returning ahead of its finale. Rather than waiting until The Testaments season 1 came to a close, Hulu announced that the show would be returning for a second season earlier in 2026. Knowing what was coming ahead at the end of The Testaments’ first season, Hulu was smart to announce the renewal ahead of time, giving viewers reassurance that another season was a definitive. The Testaments season 2 has a lot to cover.

What To Expect From The Testaments Season 2’s Story

The Testaments season 1 spent some time establishing Gilead in its current era, bringing viewers into the future and giving them an understanding of what they could take from The Handmaid’s Tale into this new story. As the dystopian series continued, however, delving into entirely new stories from a new group of girls, The Testaments began to ramp up. With Chase Infiniti as Agnes, Lucy Halliday as Daisy, and Ann Dowd reprising her role as Aunt Lydia, the series set up an interesting shift from The Handmaid’s Tale, one where the future felt less bleak than its predecessor.

The stakes ramped up for the girls, each of whom were coming to terms with their lives within Gilead. While Beka’s (Mattea Conforti) life has changed entirely over the course of the last episodes, The Testaments still has much to explore surrounding her marriage to Garth Chapin (Brad Alexander), and what’s next. The Testaments will explore why Agnes’ marriage to Commander Weston (Reed Diamond) has been called off, there’s more to explore surrounding his sudden decision after her confession, and the reveal that Daisy is June’s (Elizabeth Moss) daughter, looking to stir rebellion, sets up The Testaments season 2 nicely.

While it appears that the majority of the cast of The Testaments will return for its second season, there may be some disruption in who’s set to come back and who isn’t. The main cast, including Halliday, Infiniti, Conforti, Dowd, Rowan Blanchard, Mabel Li, and Brad Alexander are likely to return for The Testaments season 2, especially with how the show set things up. Moss, who starred in The Handmaid’s Tale throughout its run, returned for a surprising cameo as June Osborne, which could mean she’d be happy to come back again for another cameo during The Testaments season 2.

While there are countless things that could happen to fracture the cast, the main players should be returning for The Testaments season 2. Alongside the expected cast, there could be space to see author Margaret Atwood back on the show once again. In The Handmaid’s Tale, Atwood made a cameo appearance, and then became far more involved in the creation and execution of The Testaments. After appearing on the series in The Testaments season 1 finale, it’s possible that the author and executive producer could find herself back on camera next season, perhaps even with a bigger role than before.

While it’s possible that The Testaments season 2 could be coming sooner than expected, the realistic release window would follow the show’s original schedule. The Testaments season 1 premiered in April 2026, about a year after the series began production. Though it may not take a full year for the series to produce a second season, it feels likely that the release window of The Testaments season 2 will coincide with what’s already played with audiences. The Testaments season 1 took about four months to film, which is likely aligned with how long the second season will take to film.

Though it’s currently unknown if the series is filming or close to being in production, The Testaments season 2 may have a shorter window to film, edit, and promote the series in order to bring it back on the same timeline. It’s likely that the series will return in April 2027, bringing the show back for another season at the same time of year that viewers got the chance to see the first. The Testaments season 2, regardless of when it returns, will be an exciting venture for Hulu to dive into.
