Villarreal defender set for Premier League return?

Chelsea are exploring a move for Villarreal defender Willy Kambwala as they continue to prioritise young, high potential talent in their long term squad planning.

The 21 year old centre back has quietly put together a solid campaign in La Liga, building on the experience he gained during his early breakthrough at Manchester United. Since making the move to Spain in 2024, Kambwala has begun to establish himself as a reliable defensive option, showing clear signs of development in a more consistent first team environment.

This season has been an important step forward in his progression. Kambwala has made 19 league appearances for Villarreal, accumulating over 1,100 minutes of action in La Liga. While he is not a defender who contributes heavily in attacking areas, his defensive numbers highlight his growing influence. He has helped his side to multiple clean sheets and averages over one tackle per game, alongside consistent interceptions and clearances. Those metrics underline a player who is becoming increasingly dependable at the back.

Standing at over 1.9 metres tall, Kambwala offers a strong physical presence, something Chelsea have been keen to add to their defensive options. He is comfortable in aerial duels, composed in possession, and capable of stepping out with the ball when required. His ability to also operate at right back provides added versatility, which is highly valued in modern defensive systems.

Chelsea‘s interest is rooted in both immediate squad needs and long term vision. The club has invested heavily in young defenders in recent windows, but they are still looking to build depth and competition across the back line. Kambwala fits the profile of a player who can develop into a regular starter over time while providing useful rotation in the short term.

There is also a familiarity with English football that works in Chelsea‘s favour. Having already played in the Premier League during his time at Manchester United, Kambwala would not be arriving as a complete unknown. That experience, combined with a full season in La Liga, has helped round out his game and improve his tactical awareness.

From Villarreal’s perspective, the situation is less straightforward. The Spanish side only signed Kambwala last year and have him under contract until 2029, meaning they are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, Chelsea‘s financial strength and willingness to invest in youth could test that resolve, particularly if the player shows interest in returning to England.
