CinemaCon 2026 attendees got a first look at the highly anticipated Highlander reboot on Wednesday.

Cavill stars as the 16th-century Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, who discovers he’s immortal and destined to battle fellow warriors across generations for a mysterious prize. The character was originally played by Christopher Lambert in the 1986 film, which also starred Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart.

The new footage released by Amazon MGM offers a closer look at Cavill’s MacLeod. The preview opens with Cavill walking through a crowded club before squaring off against an enemy, immediately setting a grounded but intense tone for the reimagining. From there, the footage begins to unpack MacLeod’s origins, with Cavill’s voice explaining that he is immortal and has lived since the 1500s.

While the footage itself was brief, much of the presentation leaned into behind-the-scenes material, including one that gave a first look at Russell Crowe’s role in the film as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the mentor figure originally played by Connery, hinting at a key relationship that will shape MacLeod’s journey. Dave Bautista was also shown momentarily as The Kurgan, the brutal antagonist first portrayed by Clancy Brown.

Massive sets built for the film were also highlighted in the footage, along with glimpses of large-scale action sequences and intense fight choreography blending swordplay with modern combat. Producers and writers also took time to spotlight Cavill’s dedication to the role, noting that he trained extensively with both swords and firearms to prepare, a commitment that reflected in the footage, which shows a more physical, hands-on approach to the character’s combat style.

The cast, which also includes Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Marisa Abela, Jeremy Irons, and Max Zhang, appeared throughout the presentation. The preview ended with the cast repeating the franchise’s iconic line, “there can be only one,” before the Highlander logo flashed across the screen.

Following the original film, the Highlander franchise expanded into multiple sequels, an animated series, and spinoff novels, but despite the fanfare, the later films were met with mixed reviews. Cavill’s star-studded reboot marks a bit of a rebound for Highlander, and the first time MacLeod’s story will be returning to theaters since 2000’s Highlander: Endgame.

An official release date for Highlander has not yet been announced.
