Andor Creator Reveals Season 2’s Biggest Cliffhanger Has No Answer

According to show creator Tony Gilroy, Andor’s biggest cliffhanger doesn’t have a solution. The hit Star Wars series, Andor, ended its run earlier this year to astounding praise from audiences. Although the titular character dies in the subsequent film, Rogue One, the final TV show scene reveals that he and his lover, Bix Caleen, had a child.

On the matter, Tony Gilroy told GoldDerby that part of his process for adding the baby to the ending was to tell [Walt Disney CEO] Bob Iger there’s a baby. And he can name it, and he can [gender] it, and they can do whatever they want with it.”

Tony Gilroy also explains that this impulse came from not wanting to leave audiences with the “bummer of [Andor] dying.” He also revealed that it helped reaffirm Bix’s motivation to leave Cassian Andor, giving up their love for the greater good.

The most compelling part of this quote is that Tony Gilroy has no idea who that baby is, and that there’s no confirmed link to any character in the Star Wars universe. This franchise is known for linking its stories through the use of legacy characters, with Andor even incorporating figures like Mon Mothma, Saw Gerrera, and Bail Organa.

The blank slate of this baby could give Disney a character to work with in future projects, using the emotional resonance of Andor to embolden a future story. Gilroy also shares what his intention with the baby was, explaining that he used it as both a symbol of hope and a justification for Bix’s departure and absence in Rogue One.

Yes, Cassian Andor’s child will grow up during the era of the original trilogy, making him about 40 during the sequels. No, I don’t think that child needs to be a character we already know or appear in future Star Wars media. While Tony Gilroy may have left this aspect of the story open-ended, the baby already serves a distinct purpose.

Sure, one could make the argument for Cassian Andor and Bix’s legacies, with the hope that this child could someday honor their sacrifices and become a hero in their own right, but that’s not necessary. This baby represents something even more beautiful on its own: life and hope.

We see the galaxy during one of its darkest periods in Andor, and Cassian Andor later sacrifices everything to create a better world for the future. Because of his actions, this child will be able to grow up and see a time when evil is defeated and peace is restored. The beautiful irony of Andor is that the baby may never know that.
