I have packed for enough trips to know that the item I forget will never be the dramatic one. I will remember the dinner dress, the extra swimsuit and three pairs of shoes, then arrive at the airport with 12 percent battery and no charging cable. Or I will make it all the way to the hotel before realizing the one thing standing between me and sleep is the eye mask sitting on my nightstand at home.
That is why my real travel essentials are not the fantasy-vacation purchases. They are the small problem-solvers that keep a delay, spill, blister or dead phone from becoming the main character of the trip. They live in the same pouches, return to the same pockets and earn their space whether I am packing a weekender or checking a full suitcase.
This is the list I mentally run through when the outfits are packed but I still have that feeling that I am forgetting something. It is deliberately tight: no gadget that needs its own tutorial and no “just in case” item I have carried through four airports without touching.
I already have a complete 70-item travel packing guide for the trips that require every category. This is the opposite list: the 23 small, repeatable things that earn a spot whether I am leaving for two nights or ten.
