For more than four decades, Dragon Ball has been one of the biggest names in the world, especially as one of anime’s defining faces. Since Akira Toriyama’s manga first began in 1984, Goku has gone from a weird little kid with a monkey tail to one of the most recognizable anime characters on the planet. That’s why the latest Jump Festa update feels so strange.

When Shueisha revealed the key visual for Jump Festa 2027, Goku was nowhere to be seen. The event is set for December 19 and 20, 2026, and the poster features plenty of familiar faces from some of Jump’s biggest series. But somehow, one of the biggest names in the magazine’s history didn’t make the cut. That would already be strange on its own, but Goku has been a regular face on Jump Festa visuals for years. Even when Dragon Ball wasn’t part of the main stage lineup, Goku was still there. This time, though, there’s not even a little corner saved for him.

After 42 years of seeing Goku attached to practically every major Jump celebration, watching him disappear from one of the biggest events on the calendar is hard to ignore. It doesn’t mean Dragon Ball is finished, but it does mark a very strange moment for a franchise that has been tied to Shonen Jump for generations.

Goku’s Shocking Absence From The Jump Festa 2027 Visual Marks A Strange New Era For Dragon Ball

The first reaction to Goku’s absence is probably going to be, “Well, Dragon Ball isn’t getting a Jump Festa stage this year.” Fair enough. The problem is that Naruto is right there on the same key visual. Naruto‘s original manga ended years ago, and the main anime story wrapped up a long time ago too, yet the knuckle-headed ninja still gets a place on one of Jump’s biggest promotional posters, but Goku doesn’t.

While Naruto does have a panel at Jump Festa 2027, Boruto is also featured on the same visual despite having no separate panel announced. Having two characters from the same franchise on the poster already feels a little strange, which makes Goku’s absence stand out even more. Dragon Ball has been tied to Jump Festa for years, with Goku basically becoming one of the event’s regular faces. Seeing him missing while One Piece, Dandadan, Naruto, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen get representation is hard to ignore.

The official stage lineup also has no Dragon Ball entry. And the timing couldn’t be more interesting. Toei has announced Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, which will adapt the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner” arc, but the studio still hasn’t given it a release date. With the franchise completely missing from Jump Festa 2027, a 2027 premiere now looks much harder to fit in.

Still, this is Dragon Ball. Shonen Jump could easily be saving something for the big day. Leaving Goku off the visual and Dragon Ball off the stage lineup could be the setup for a surprise reveal. If that’s the plan, December just got a lot more interesting.

With Beerus And Galactic Patrol On The Way, The TV Future Of Dragon Ball Is Still Wide Open

The missing Jump Festa appearance doesn’t mean Dragon Ball is going anywhere. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is still set to premiere on October 11, and The Galactic Patrol is still waiting to bring the Planet-Eater Moro arc to the screen. With its episode count and arc revealed, the TV side of the franchise clearly has plenty left in the tank.

So Goku disappearing from the Jump Festa 2027 visual doesn’t mean Dragon Ball is finished. It does, however, make the franchise’s current situation pretty hard to ignore. After 42 years of Goku being one of Shonen Jump’s biggest faces, having no spot on the poster and no announced stage is a strange sight.

There could still be a surprise waiting at Jump Festa. Dragon Ball has pulled those kinds of reveals before, and Shueisha could easily have something planned that hasn’t been announced yet. But if December comes and Goku really stays off the stage, this could end up being one of the strangest moments in the franchise’s long history. After 42 years, seeing Jump Festa without Dragon Ball would be a pretty strange way to mark the end of an era.
