How Long After WandaVision Marvel’s VisionQuest Series Is Set

VisionQuest‘s release date is just a few weeks away, and it will conclude the televised trilogy that WandaVision started. Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 18-year history, all kinds of interconnected stories have played out, most of them happening on the big screen.

Phase One introduced characters whose individual journeys eventually led to 2012’s The Avengers. Following that, things like the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the Black Panther movies were more self-contained, yet still impacted the overall universe. However, WandaVision changed everything by becoming the MCU’s first TV show.

WandaVision rewrote Marvel rules when it debuted on Disney+, as the series started as a black-and-white sitcom that slowly evolved into a sci-fi drama. It remains one of the studio’s most ambitious projects and was extremely well executed, which is why the story continued in Agatha All Along.

Although the show didn’t feature Wanda or Vision, it followed up on the story threads that WandaVision set in motion, which VisionQuest looks set to wrap up. In many ways, it looks like VisionQuest will reverse WandaVision’s premise entirely by having much of the narrative take place in Vision’s mind, despite still having real-world ramifications.

The unique premise mixed with its connections to WandaVision and Agatha All Along make it an extremely exciting release ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. Still, trying to place it in the MCU timeline looked like it would be difficult, but thankfully, we have some clarification on how long after WandaVision it takes place.

VisionQuest Is Set Several Years After WandaVision

After White Vision was restored in WandaVision‘s finale, the hero went into hiding, with VisionQuest set to follow him searching for his memories and humanity. As a result, it may seem like the series will take place right after WandaVision, but in reality, several years have passed between the two projects.

VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed this timeline himself, claiming, Years have passed since WandaVision. I would say we’re about current with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” While the MCU timeline is always changing, our best guess would be that the two shows are set roughly five years apart, based on the information we have.

The events of WandaVision happened just a few weeks after Avengers: Endgame, which itself took place in 2023. As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, most fans are in agreement that this takes place in 2028 based on Ned and MJ’s time at MIT. Therefore, Matalas’ comments indicate the events of VisionQuest also occur in the same year.

Although there is no confirmation that Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlett Witch will return in VisionQuest, the timeline suggests the character could still play a big role in the series, as Vision will no doubt learn about his partner’s death.

Discovering what the protagonist has been doing all this time will be fascinating, and when he begins returning to reality, the realization of what he’s lost will hit even harder. This explains why VisionQuest is set a good few years apart from the original show, and helps provide some clarity on the MCU’s extremely complicated timeline.

Marvel Is Finally Simplifying Its Timeline After Years Of Confusion

With so many projects coexisting simultaneously, Marvel’s timeline has become incredibly complex over the years. Perhaps the greatest example of how difficult it is to understand is 2021’s cinematic slate, which saw the releases of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Black Widow was a prequel starring the titular character who just died two movies prior. Shang-Chi and No Way Home are both set after Endgame, making them more current movies, while Eternals jumps around eras, starting from 5000 BC before catching up to the modern day, creating an all-together hard-to-follow timeline.

Even for those capable of keeping up with these specific movies, the MCU is constantly jumping back and forward through time, so it’s only right it finally started simplifying things. The Blip was a big factor in causing this chaos, putting the MCU ahead of the real world, but it seems 2028 is becoming the established current year.

It’s when VisionQuest and Spider-Man: Brand New Day take place, making it the most recent part of the timeline after Wonder Man, Daredevil: Born Again, and Thunderbolts* all took place in 2027, or so we believe. Avengers: Doomsday should then fit into the MCU timeline seamlessly, presumably being set in late 2028.

VisionQuest will debut on Disney+ on October 14. The limited series will consist of eight episodes and will have a two-episode premiere.

While previous prequels, time skips, and other cosmic shenanigans made it almost impossible to fully understand the timeline, Marvel appears to be doing things mostly chronologically now. There will always be some sense of confusion without projects outright stating the dates they’re set, but the recent era has seen a big improvement.

Hopefully, Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t throw any major surprises, as we know it has to at least take place after Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four. Therefore, VisionQuest can help the timeline gradually move forward, setting up an easier-to-digest future for Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
