Manchester City is close to reaching an agreement with Marseille for goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, according to VoetbalPrimeur. Personal terms have already been settled, leaving the two clubs to finalize the transfer fee.
City initially offered €2 million, while Marseille requested around €3.5 million for the Argentina international. Negotiations have progressed since that opening proposal, and both clubs are reportedly confident that the remaining difference can be resolved.
VoetbalPrimeur attributes the initial details to Foot Mercato, which reported that Rulli wants to complete the move. Fabrizio Romano later confirmed that City had submitted an official bid and entered club-to-club negotiations with Marseille.
The 34-year-old is expected to become Gianluigi Donnarumma’s backup at the Etihad Stadium. Donnarumma established himself as City’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, while James Trafford’s departure for Leeds United created an opening for another senior option.
Rulli’s contract with Marseille runs until June 2027, which limits the French club’s ability to demand a substantial fee. Marseille signed him from Ajax for around €4 million in August 2024, and the goalkeeper made 29 Ligue 1 appearances during the 2025/26 season.
The proposed transfer would give Rulli his first opportunity to play in the Premier League. He previously played in Spain with Real Sociedad and Villarreal before spending 18 months at Ajax and moving to France.
Rulli brings considerable experience as a reserve goalkeeper. He was part of Argentina’s squads for the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, while he also won the Europa League with Villarreal in 2021. His decisive penalty save against David de Gea completed Villarreal’s shootout victory over Manchester United in the final.
City appears to have secured the player’s approval, and the size of Marseille’s asking price makes the remaining negotiations relatively straightforward. The clubs still need to agree on the final fee before Rulli can travel for his medical and sign his contract.
Status: Personal terms between Rulli and Manchester City are reportedly settled. City and Marseille are close to an agreement worth around €3.5 million, but the clubs have not finalized the fee and the transfer remains a transfer rumor.
