5 Years Later, Invader Zim Is Returning With New 2026 Series

The cult classic Nickelodeon series Invader Zim is returning in 2026 for a new comic series, and while fan excitement is high, the franchise’s creator has some reservations. Though Zim was officially canceled in 2002, the series enjoyed a great second life thanks to sustained fan interest long after it went off the air. Now, with a new Zim series on the horizon, fans have reason to be cautiously optimistic despite some murkiness surrounding the new release.

First announced by IGN, the new Invader Zim series is coming from BOOM! Studios, the comic publisher currently adapting big franchises such as Power Rangers, Buffy, and Supernatural. Few details are known about the series at the time of writing, aside from the fact that it will be coming later in 2026 and that comic legends Jim Zub and Dax Gordine will be part of the revival.

The new Zim series is coming 5 years after the end of the previous run. From 2015 to 2021, Oni Comics was the comic home of Invader Zim. With series creator Jhonen Vasquez helping oversee the project, Oni’s Invader Zim comics were well received. Unfortunately, despite some initial optimism surrounding BOOM!’s stab at Invader Zim, Vasquez has expressed mixed emotions about the revival.

Why Invader Zim’s Creator Has A Strange Relationship With The New Series

Zim holds a live wire crackling with electricity as he laughs, mouth wide open.

In a post to Instagram released on July 3rd, Jhonen Vasquez expressed disappointment that BOOM! hadn’t reached out to him about the new Invader Zim comic. He learned about it at pretty much the same time as fans did. Though Vasquez notably did not strike an aggressive tone with his Instagram post, it’s clear that he would have appreciated a bit more consideration.

Since Vasquez released his statement, Zim’s new writer, Jim Zub, responded on his personal blog. Zub said that Zim is near and dear to his heart and that when he signed up for the job, he was under the impression that Vasquez had approved the new series. Zub then sympathized with Vasquez and claimed that BOOM! has subsequently reached out to the acclaimed creator to rectify the situation.

What that involves remains to be seen, but the situation certainly starts BOOM!’s era of Zim off on a strange note.

Still, despite Vasquez’s reservations, there’s good reason to believe that BOOM!’s new series will be solid. BOOM!’s work on Power Rangers has been met with a positive reception by fans, as have the studios’ other licensed comics. Additionally, the announced creative team inspires confidence.

Jim Zub has a mountain of comic works under his belt, including big projects for Marvel and DC. Notably, he’s also worked with BOOM! before on their Adventure Time comic series. Meanwhile, artist Dax Gordine is a comic titan who has lent his distinct style to a wide variety of Marvel Comics, including Spider-Man.

So, all signs point to Invader Zim having a level of creative energy that should make it a big success. Hopefully, BOOM!’s assurances that they’ve worked something out with Vasquez end up bearing fruit. After the big win that was Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, it’s clear that there’s still a great deal of creative life left in Invader Zim. Only time will tell whether BOOM!’s new series will live up to that storied legacy.
