In 7 Weeks, Sony Will Officially Release The Missing Spider-Man Movie

Despite claims of superhero fatigue in recent years, these larger-than-life figures remain a staple of the film industry, and there is few bigger than Spider-Man. Although the iconic Marvel hero has been around since the 1960s and technically had his first live-action movie in 1977, it was Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man that made him a theatrical juggernaut.

The movie grossed over $825 million and had two sequels, proving that the fan favorite hero belonged on the big screen. Since then, there have been two Amazing Spider-Man films alongside the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, not to mention a host of animated movies and televised projects that have only made the Spider-Man brand even bigger.

However, despite all these great entries, Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels like the missing Spider-Man movie. Unlike everything that has come before, Brand New Day looks to be the quintessential Spider-Man outing, as it will feature the web-slinger at his peak, surrounded by new and returning villains.

Having this already established universe where Peter is an independent hero feels somewhat fresh, as he’s been a relative rookie in many other projects. Ahead of the MCU’s Spider-Man, we had two origin stories, and then some fun takes that saw Peter taking on major antagonists, but not when he was deep into his career. In comparison, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has already clashed with plenty of the hero’s rogues list and even fought alongside the Avengers, making it refreshing to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day have so many villain candidates.

Some will be new challenges, but others will be faces Peter has collided with before on some level. He’s also not a sidekick, a tag he couldn’t quite shake in Spider-Man: Homecoming due to his Iron Man connections, meaning the prospect of him interacting with key Marvel characters like the Hulk and Frank Castle will be thrilling, and he still feels like the main attraction.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has The Potential To Be The Best Live-Action Spider-Man Movie Yet

Spider-Man on the Punisher’s truck in Spider-Man Brand New Day

We’ve never really had a live-action Spider-Man film that sees an experienced Peter Parker handling his own business while crossing paths with other key heroes and villains, until now. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day seemingly adapting the Neogenic Nightmare arc from the 90s animated series as well, the movie is clearly paying homage to previous stories while creating something new.

When it comes to live-action Spider-Man movies, the bar is already set very high. Sam Raimi’s first two movies are masterpieces and rank among some of the best superhero films ever made. While the third was a little more disappointing, fans still have plenty of nostalgia towards Spider-Man 3.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren’t received quite so well, but still had some excellent elements within them, before the MCU came along and offered a different take on the character. Although they are often divisive, Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home all had plenty of fanfare, proving Brand New Day will struggle to exceed everything that came before it.

Are you an Avenger — or just a friendly neighborhood bystander?

Luckily, it has all the ingredients needed to succeed. This movie’s version of Peter Parker is arguably one of the most interesting we’ve seen on-screen, as no one remembers who he is, leaving him isolated, alone, but still a hero. The world knows Spider-Man, but Peter is going through a complete reset while fighting off all kinds of criminals.

With so many villains advertised, the audience is left guessing who the central threat will actually be, and the Man-Spider teases only make this impending story more interesting. The additions of The Punisher, Bruce Banner, and potentially even Jean Grey only add to the mystique of Brand New Day‘s fascinating plot.

Tom Holland has also spoken highly of the film, suggesting he’s proud of what the team managed to produce, meaning the next seven weeks can’t pass soon enough. There’s even a chance that Daredevil features in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after Daredevil: Born Again season 2’s ending saw the New York-based hero in jail.

Balancing all these exciting story prospects will be hard, especially since there has to be a focus on how Peter has coped with losing Aunt May and being seemingly forgotten about by his loved ones. However, if Sony gets all this right, we’re in for a treat, especially with Destin Daniel Cretton directing. Whether it can reach the heights of the very best Spider-Man movies is still to be seen, but with Spider-Man: Brand New Day having so much potential, don’t be surprised if this one shocks everyone and becomes a modern classic.
