The Fallout franchise is in a remarkably strong position right now considering that we haven’t had a single-player game in the series for over a decade. Much of that is thanks to the recent second season of the Prime Video adaptation, and appetites for more releases tied to the universe are as big as ever.
That leaves most players returning to the older games in the franchise to get their fix for the time being, while we wait to hear more from Bethesda and Todd Howard about what their plans are. There are still releases coming out around those older properties, but fans aren’t necessarily happy about the whole thing.
In case you missed the Xbox showcase at Summer Games Fest over the weekend, there were a bunch of high-profile announcements that have implications for the company moving forward. Among them was confirmation of the next phase of Fallout 76, with the Infestations update now available for players to jump into.
As fun as that is for those who play it (myself included), the big question of when we’re going to get another game in the franchise is still hanging there. Over on Reddit, one user shared a post expressing their desire for a new game announcement, and lamenting the lack of news from the developer.
Other comments were inclined to agree, with one saying, “I like FO76. Love the show. But at this point, I’m more than ready for a new game.”
While another added, “I don’t understand how Bethesda/Microsoft can look at Fallout 5 releasing in 2032 at the earliest and be okay with it. I mean that’s a nearly 20 year gap between 4 & 5, and with no new mainline games or spin-offs in the near future, that is crazy.”
“I like FO76 and I was disappointed. It just isn’t lively, varied, or well-supported enough to serve as a substitute for a new main series entry, and the Infestations update really isn’t notable enough to warrant a showcase trailer,” a third said.
The unfortunate fact for Bethesda and Xbox is that it’s basically impossible to think of anything they can release that will plug the gap a new game in the series would otherwise have filled. Fallout is an iconic franchise that deserves to be continued sooner than the currently proposed release date, so let’s hope they can pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and get a single-player game to us sooner than that.

Fallout
Fallout is a post-apocalyptic RPG franchise set in an alternate future where a nuclear war devastates the world. Players explore vast, open worlds filled with mutants, raiders, and advanced technology. The series emphasizes player choice, allowing various approaches to combat, dialogue, and decision-making. Each game follows different protagonists navigating the wasteland to uncover secrets, form alliances, and rebuild civilization amidst the ruins of the old world. The franchise is known for its rich lore, dark humor, and retro-futuristic aesthetic, which has transferred over into its new series on Amazon Prime.
