Zendaya Reacts To Christopher Nolan’s Rare Praise

Zendaya can do no wrong in Christopher Nolan’s eyes.

Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel in series such as Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover, but has now fully transformed into a global superstar. The actress has since starred in major film franchises, including Dune and the MCU’s Spider-Man movies, and has also won two Emmy Awards for her leading role in HBO’s controversial series Euphoria.

It’s no secret that Hollywood and the world are infatuated with Zendaya due to her incredible acting and down-to-Earth personality. Even major filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan have praised the actress by stating that she’s a “true movie star,” and that she’s “always perfect.” In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Zendaya shared her thoughts on Nolan’s comments made during the filming of his upcoming epic The Odyssey:

Liam Crowley: Zendaya, I heard you got a pretty big director’s note this time around. When I was growing up, my high school theater director, if he said good for you, we could rest easy that night. You got a perfect from Mr. Nolan?

Zendaya: No one can tell me anything now (laughs).

Liam Crowley: Do you remember the scene? Do you remember the day?

Zendaya: Yeah. You know what’s so funny is I didn’t know how precious that was. I mean, it was precious for me just because it was him, but I didn’t know that like, “Oh, y’all wasn’t getting perfect.”

Liam Crowley: Matt and Tom were pretty upset that they didn’t get one.

Zendaya: I know. I know. I think he’s such a confident filmmaker, and he has such confidence in his actors as well that I feel like he’s like, “You got it. Absolutely. You’re done. Yeah, we’re done. You’re good.” You kind of start to question like, “Oh, did I do the right thing? Does he like what we were doing? Am I on the right track?” I found that if he’s good with it, you’re doing good. You’re doing well. Yeah, you’re doing just great. Perfect.

The Odyssey marks Zendaya’s first time working alongside the legendary filmmaker Nolan, and it’s clear she left an impression. Co-star Matt Damon previously addressed the “perfect” comments made by the filmmaker, and stated, “She got a ‘perfect’? I’ve never even gotten a ‘great.’ She got a ‘perfect’? He [Tom Holland] and I bitched about it for the entire rest of the film. ‘Did you get anything today?’ ‘No, I got a ‘good’—moving on.’ ‘Yeah, me too.”

The actress will be starring in The Odyssey as the Greek goddess Athena, the divine protector of Damon’s Odysseus. Her character acts as a constant presence to guide Odysseus’s journey and aide his family to return home. In Homer’s original epic, which Nolan based his movie on, Athena acts as the driving force of the story, which is a major feat for Zendaya and is already receiving Oscar buzz for her role in the movie before its release.

The Odyssey will journey to theaters on July 17.
