The fact that Mariah remembers canoodling with the man in the hotel lounge before smothering him might suggest that the man did something to prompt it. It’s possible he may have attacked Mariah or attempted to assault her, and she was scared, fought back, and ended up killing the man.
The fact that this is The Young and the Restless suggests there is more to the story than is being teased, and it’s unclear if the show will reveal this piece by piece, or dedicate time to a full reveal. The incident is being portrayed as murder, but there’s a strong chance this was a killing in self-defense, which is far more understandable.
