Xbox Officially Makes Hit RPG Free After Giving It Away By Mistake

Some Xbox players can now get a classic RPG absolutely free, thanks to a pricing error in the Xbox store. Between Game Pass and store sales, Xbox gives away a ton of freebies: it seems like every week, there’s a new title you can claim for free.

But this one’s a little different. While Xbox giveaways are usually intentional, this one came about entirely by mistake. However, in an effort to correct that mistake, Xbox is now giving away the game many players picked up for free — but there’s a catch involved if you want to claim it for yourself.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Wasteland Remastered dev inXile, “A couple weeks ago an error made Wasteland Remastered free on the Microsoft/Xbox Store, but what people snagged before we fixed the glitch can’t actually be played.” (Spotted by Comicbook.com)

In other words, Wasteland Remastered, the 2020 remaster of a 1988 RPG, had its price accidentally set to free on the Xbox and Microsoft PC gaming stores. Many players caught onto this and claimed the freebie, perhaps thinking it was intentional, or just wanting to take advantage of the opportunity.

However, because the price was due to an error, it appears that consoles were unable to recognize that players actually owned it. As a result, anyone who tried to play Wasteland Remastered after claiming it for free found themselves unable to launch it.

So inXile, rather than revoke access, decided to give out legitimate copies to those who did get a copy of Wasteland Remastered for free. The original version will be removed from their libraries, but afterward, they should find a new copy available for free in the Offers & Credits section of their account. The caveat is, of course, that if you didn’t already claim Wasteland while it was free, you won’t get it for free as part of this offer.

In the replies, inXile refers to Wasteland as “the grand-pappy of post-apoc.” It’s not unlike Fallout, in that you’ll be exploring a world devastated by nuclear war — including the ruins of Las Vegas — but gameplay-wise, it’s a lot closer to classic CRPG Fallout than the modern 3D entries.

That should come as no surprise, as the original Wasteland was developed by Interplay Productions, who would later go on to make Fallout 1 and 2. Like old-school Fallout, Wasteland is tough; combat can be unforgiving, and in dialogue sequences, NPCs aren’t likely to bend to your will unless you have the requisite stats.

But also like old-school Fallout, Wasteland can be rewarding if you stick with it. It has an engaging story that revolves around a rogue AI and a crazed cyborg. Uniquely, it was an early example of a persistent world in video gaming, meaning that the changes you make to the world persist even when you leave and re-enter the area.

In 2002, Interplay founder (and Wasteland and Fallout dev) Brian Fargo launched a new company: inXile. To commemorate the series’ 30th anniversary in 2018, inXile announced they were working on a remastered version of Wasteland, which was released on Xbox and PC in 2020.

The remaster features updated graphics and audio, an expanded score, and numerous bug fixes and quality of life improvements. That’s the version that was mistakenly made available for free, and the version you may be able to able to claim again on Xbox.
