Xbox Game Pass Has Me For Life, But Not Just Because Of The Game Library

With nearly every console now offering a gaming service subscription, players are left with the option of either picking the one they feel provides the most value or coughing up an extra $50 a month to subscribe to all of them. While value is hard to define across the board, as different features matter more to some and not to others, Xbox Game Pass has guaranteed my subscription for life with one single feature.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is still in Beta on Xbox Game Pass, but it’s already worth the additional cost. As a feature specifically offered for Xbox Game Pass’ highest tier, Ultimate, Xbox Cloud Gaming opens a whole new world of possibilities for playing subscription-based games that neither PlayStation Plus nor Nintendo Switch Online have been able to compete with yet.

When it comes to choosing a console, there are a lot of factors to weigh. Some are more powerful while others are more portable, but the options can be limited if you seek something that offers a good balance. PlayStation has the PS Portal and the PS Remote Play app as portable options. Thanks to a 2024 update, PlayStation now has a version of Cloud Streaming, but it’s only compatible with the PS Portal, as the PS Remote Play app does not support the Cloud Streaming feature yet and still works as more of a screencast of your PS5.

In another win for Xbox Game Pass, the service will be adding Metaphor ReFantazio on May 29, in addition to other great games coming to the service.

If portability is important, then the Nintendo Switch might be the obvious choice, but it isn’t nearly as strong as other home consoles. Even though the Nintendo Switch 2 will be more powerful, it’s still only reported to be comparable to most last-gen consoles, which brings us to what I feel is the best alternative, Xbox’s Cloud Gaming feature. With Cloud Gaming, games in the Xbox Game Pass library, and a large selection of games you already own, can be accessed anywhere, on almost any device.

Xbox Cloud Gaming does include its downsides as well. Even though it’s been around for several years now, it still experiences performance issues with more demanding games or less-than-ideal connectivity conditions. So, while it can be a great feature, if you’re somewhere with poor internet, it’s unlikely to run without issues.

Whether it’s an Xbox One, smart TV, iPad, laptop, phone, or other supported device, you can enjoy Xbox Game Pass games on it, and with almost any controller, not just Xbox. This means I can go from my iPad in my living room to my laptop in my office to my phone at the airport and immediately jump right back into whatever game I am playing. The versatility of being able to use nearly any device I own allows me to enjoy my Xbox Game Pass subscription anywhere, and I don’t even need an Xbox to do it.

Trying to keep up with the latest console releases can be a major struggle, making it difficult not to feel left behind by exclusive games or the most powerful hardware. However, this can be hard to accomplish with console prices increasing and release periods often falling close together. A prime example of this is the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 releases, which happened within just days of each other, forcing several players to choose one or the other.

Xbox Game Pass has been the go-to place for trying new games. Yet, it faces a new and significant challenge in 2025 to stay on top of things.

Now, however, that choice no longer holds as much weight as it once did. Without even owning an Xbox Series X|S, players can access new games through their Xbox One or any other device that supports the Cloud Gaming app, making the choice an easier one as you can have your cake and eat it too. Having an Xbox Series X|S is still the ideal option for performance reasons, but if you don’t have the luxury of purchasing one, Xbox Cloud Gaming provides a great alternative.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Can Provide Access To Major Releases Right Away

Another major thing that sealed the deal for me with Xbox Game Pass’s Cloud Gaming feature is the lack of waiting. Since you’re streaming the game, there’s no download required if you’re playing on an Xbox Series X|S or any other device. As soon as the game launches, you can jump right in, which is how I was recently able to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 right away, without having to wait for a download to finish or adjust storage space.

While most games can generally be downloaded within an hour, some exceptions can occasionally take all night, and if you only start the process at midnight, that can mean waiting till the next day to even play the game. That being said, this is only something I would recommend for those who either don’t have a console to download it to in the first place or don’t want to wait. Downloading to the console, even if you do it after you’re done initially streaming the game, is always going to provide the best experience in the long run.

Xbox Game Pass Has So Much Value, But Many Subscribers Don’t See The Real Issue With It

Xbox Game Pass has had a stacked 2025 so far, with many great games, but it’s not as valuable as you may think, especially to the general consumer.

Overall, while the Xbox Game Pass itself offers the majority of features that most console subscription services do, Xbox Cloud Gaming, even in its beta, is what pushes it over the top for me. All the same, I’m eager to see where PlayStation goes with its Cloud Streaming Feature and whether that will also soon be available on any device as well. If it is, I’ll fully support that as well, since making games more accessible to more people is what matters most.
