X-Men ’97 Season 3 Receives Exciting Release Update From Producer

Marvel Studios is getting ready to bring back one of its most beloved shows.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline is nearing Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s big summer release, audience members will also have the iconic mutants returning to Disney+ in less than a week. However, before their massive 2026 return has even begun, Marvel Studios is already working on their plans for 2027.

In a new interview with The Direct, Larry Houston, who works on X-Men ’97 as one of the producers, revealed some exciting updates for season 3, which has already been greenlit. Unlike season 2, viewers will not have to wait for too long for the show’s return after this summer, saying that “Luckily, the production problems won’t occur again. There was a huge gap of time between [season] one and two. They’ve learned their lessons, so with [seasons] three and four, that won’t happen again… That was a one-off.”

The critically acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series sequel has become one of Marvel Studios’ most well-received TV properties since season 1 arrived on Disney+ in 2024. As of writing, the first season is still holding a strong 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, while sitting on 91% on the audience score.

However, X-Men ’97 season 2 has already broken some solid records, as its Rotten Tomatoes score debuted at 100% and is still maintaining that number, based on 20 reviews. Whether or not it will stay at that rating by the end of the season remains to be seen.

Disney+ and Marvel Studios have already shown that they are committed to X-Men ’97 for a long time. Even though season 3 hasn’t landed its official 2027 premiere date, development is already happening on season 4.

🐺

Wolverine (Logan)

“I’m the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn’t very nice.”
You’re the fierce loner who acts first and philosophises later — but beneath that adamantium-plated exterior beats a heart that cares far more than you’d ever admit. You’ve been burned enough times to distrust the world, so you keep people at arm’s length, yet you’d throw yourself into any fight to protect the ones who slip past your defences. You don’t need a cause or a manifesto — you just need someone worth fighting for. Like Logan, your greatest strength isn’t your claws or your healing factor; it’s the stubborn refusal to let the people you love face danger alone.

Protective
Resilient
Untamed

🧠

Professor X (Charles Xavier)

“Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.”
You’re the visionary who sees the best in everyone — even when the world gives you every reason not to. Your greatest power isn’t telepathy; it’s an unshakeable belief that understanding and compassion can bridge any divide. You lead not through force but through hope, building bridges where others build walls. Some call you naive, but you know that real strength lies in extending a hand to your enemy. Like Charles Xavier, you carry the weight of a dream that most consider impossible, and you refuse to let it die.

Visionary
Empathetic
Diplomatic
Hopeful

🧲

Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)

“Peace was never an option.”
You’re the survivor who learned the hardest lesson life has to offer: the world will not protect you, so you must protect yourself. Your conviction is unbreakable and your patience is terrifying — you’ll wait years to set the right plan in motion. You don’t hate humanity; you simply refuse to let your people be victims ever again. Every action you take, no matter how ruthless, is driven by a profound love for those who share your struggle. Like Erik Lehnsherr, you are both revolutionary and tragic — a leader forged in pain who will bend the world before it bends you.

Resolute
Strategic
Ruthless
Unyielding

When ScreenRant’s own Liam Crowley interviewed Marvel Television’s Brad Winderbaum, he expressed how there is also hope to get X-Men ’97 season 5 to become a reality. The Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise stated at the time, “I hope it runs at least 5 seasons, because that’s as many seasons as the original series, so that would be really, that’d be really nice.”

As the Fox iteration of the iconic team is coming to the MCU this fall in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios is in the process of rebooting the property with a new X-Men film from Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier. With a new take on the famous group, along with X-Men ’97 happening simultaneously, the mutants are shining more than ever in media.

In terms of when X-Men ’97 season 3 might debut on Disney+, it wouldn’t be shocking if the release date ends up being sometime in July 2027. Following Doomsday in December, there won’t be any MCU films released until Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027, which leaves the summer season without any titles from Marvel Studios, allowing the animated adventure to fill a big void.

X-Men ’97 season 2 will premiere with the first three episodes on Wednesday, July 1, followed by weekly releases until August 12, only on Disney+.
