Timber absence explained

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has been left out of the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Ipswich Town tonight as a precautionary measure.

The Dutchman made his long-awaited comeback from a groin injury against Sunderland in the Premier League. He came on as a second-half substitute for Ben White, who picked up a groin injury.

Timber managed to comfortably play through the remainder of the game at right-back, but he has been left out of the matchday squad to face Ipswich in order to manage his current workload.

Arsenal don’t want to take any risks with the Netherlands international who has just returned from injury, and he should be involved for the weekend’s Premier League game at Brighton & Hove Albion.

In the absence of Timber and White, manager Mikel Arteta has chosen to go with Martin Zubimendi as a makeshift right-back against the Tractor Boys. Declan Rice, who has occasionally played in the role, has been given a rest, considering he is managing neutral hamstring pain.
