From archival Versace at Vogue World to full Roberto Cavalli fantasy, Cardi B’s Milan Fashion Week outfits worked because she never let the clothes wear her.

Fashion Week is full of celebrities wearing technically perfect outfits that I forget five minutes later. The dress is expensive. The hair is polished. The person is seated in the front row. Everything is correct—and somehow nothing is happening.

Cardi B does not have that problem.

During Milan Fashion Week, she gave us archival Versace at Vogue World, a stripped-back Off-White moment, custom Roberto Cavalli and a texture-heavy Gucci look. None of the outfits looked like an assistant handed her the newest runway sample and told her to stand still. Each one felt like a complete entrance.

That is what Cardi understands that so many celebrities get wrong: Fashion Week is not the place to disappear into tasteful clothing. It is the place to use clothing to show us more of who you already are.

She respects the assignment without losing herself
