‘We love the smell of freshly cut grass in the morning’

Atletico Madrid wasted little time in mocking Barcelona after knocking them out of the Champions League

Atletico Madrid were quick to troll Barcelona the morning after beating the Catalans in an absorbing, and controversial, Champions League quarter-final.

Barca won 2-1 on the night but it was not enough for them to advance to the last four following Atleti’s 2-0 victory at Camp Nou last week.

Tensions around the return game were heightened when Barca made an informal request to UEFA that the grass at the Metropolitano should be kept well below the minimum length of 30millimetres.

Atleti complied and also agreed to water the surface before the game and at half-time.

After squeezing through, the hosts’ social media team did not waste the opportunity to poke fun at Barca, posting on X: “We love the smell of freshly cut grass in the morning.”

Atletico go all in on mocking Barcelona

It was the latest in a series of posts that mocked Barcelona, with one using the Catalans’ own motto of ‘more than a club’ accompanying a clip of the Atleti players celebrating the victory with their supporters.

Another featured a clip of what appeared to be a lion, with a Barcelona crest replacing the animal’s head, running towards a van of people on a safari. The lion was then unmasked to reveal a friendly dog.

It is unlikely the posts will go down well in Catalonia with Barcelona already furious at what they believe were a series of poor refereeing decisions across the two legs.
