Rooney on Chelsea without Europe next season

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes Chelsea will be a real threat in the Premier League title race next season, having failed to qualify for Europe.

The Blues finished a disappointing 10th in the league standings after a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland away from home. As a result, they won’t be playing any form of European football next season.

Speaking on his BBC Podcast, Rooney believes this could be a big advantage for the Blues, and they could be right in the mix for the league title under a top manager in the form of Xabi Alonso.

He said: “I think they’ll be a real threat next season. Obviously having one game a week, and then with Alonso coming in, I think it’s exciting for the Premier League because I think he’s got the potential to be a top manager.”

Manchester United were in a similar situation during the 2025/26 season, but they were never in the title mix despite a strong second half to the campaign after Ruben Amorim‘s sacking.

Hence, it is far easier said than done. Chelsea will need to make some shrewd signings this summer, who can improve the squad and help Alonso lodge a potential charge for the English crown.
