Vaibhav Suryavanshi was threatening to take the game away from Central Zone in their Duleep Trophy 2026 semifinal against East Zone in Bengaluru. However, Rajat Patidar produced a sensational catch to end the teenager’s promising innings and give his team a crucial breakthrough.

Suryavanshi had already made a major contribution with the bat earlier in the match, scoring 92 off 81 balls in East Zone’s first innings. He looked set to make another important contribution in the chase before Patidar’s brilliance brought his innings to an end.

Rajat Patidar produces a stunning catch to dismiss Suryavanshi

Thakur bowled a full delivery on the fifth ball of the over, and Suryavanshi attempted an aerial flick towards the mid-wicket region. However, he failed to get the desired connection and sent the ball high into the air. Patidar, stationed around mid-on, immediately began running backwards and across towards the deep mid-wicket region.

The Central Zone captain kept his eyes on the ball before stretching fully and completing a superb diving catch. Suryavanshi was dismissed for 40 off 43 balls, ending a promising innings that had briefly threatened to shift the momentum in East Zone’s favour.

East Zone lose wickets after strong start

Suryavanshi started cautiously alongside senior opener Abhimanyu Easwaran as East Zone began their chase of 159. The youngster initially focused on seeing off the new-ball attack before gradually increasing the tempo. The openers put together 61 runs before Suryavanshi began taking on Yash Thakur. The left-hander hit a six and three boundaries in the first four deliveries of the 14th over, suddenly putting pressure back on Central Zone.

However, his aggressive approach eventually proved his downfall. Earlier, Central Zone were bowled out for 266 in their first innings, with Suryavanshi playing a key role for East Zone with his 92. He and Easwaran had also added 161 runs for the opening wicket in the first innings. In the second innings, East Zone started strongly with another 61-run opening stand.

However, Suryavanshi’s dismissal triggered a collapse, with the team slipping from 61/0 to 93/3. Patidar’s catch was one of two spectacular fielding moments on the day, with East Zone pacer Mohammed Shami also taking a brilliant one-handed catch in his follow-through to dismiss Harsh Dubey.
