South Africa and Australia continued their three-match ODI series with another closely contested encounter after the Proteas secured a 67-run victory in the opening game at Kingsmead, Durban, on September 24. The first ODI produced several notable performances, but Marco Jansen‘s extraordinary effort in the field quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the match.

Marco Jansen produces spectacular catch to get rid of Matt Renshaw

The remarkable dismissal came during the second ball of the 37th over of Australia’s chase, with Gerald Coetzee bowling to Matt Renshaw. The left-hander attempted to pull a shortish delivery but failed to make proper contact, with the ball coming off the splice of the bat and travelling towards deep midwicket.

Jansen immediately moved across from his position in the deep, but the ball appeared to be drifting beyond his reach. The tall all-rounder, however, managed to stretch his right hand fully while sliding across the ground.

What made the catch even more impressive was Jansen’s control after getting his hand to the ball. He managed to hold onto it with just his thumb and index finger before twisting his wrists to ensure that the ball did not touch the ground. The effort resulted in Renshaw’s dismissal and sparked plenty of appreciation for Jansen’s athleticism and awareness in the deep.

Proteas crush Aussies in the opening clash

Australia had begun their chase in commanding fashion while pursuing South Africa’s total of 298. Stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh led the early assault, smashing 60 from just 36 deliveries as Australia raced to 90/1 within the opening 10 overs. However, Marsh’s dismissal changed the momentum of the innings. Australia, who were 129/1 at one stage, suddenly lost control against South Africa’s spin attack.

The visitors eventually folded for 230, losing their final nine wickets for only 101 runs. Keshav Maharaj played a central role in the collapse, troubling Australia’s batters throughout his spell and finishing with outstanding figures of 4/20 from 9.2 overs. The defeat meant Australia could not sustain the momentum generated during the opening phase of their innings, allowing South Africa to complete a convincing 67-run win.

Jansen’s spectacular fielding contribution was not his only significant involvement in the match. He had already played an important role with the bat during South Africa’s innings, producing a rapid 75 from 59 deliveries. His aggressive knock provided South Africa with valuable runs towards the latter stages and complemented Matthew Breetzke‘s impressive century. Breetzke anchored the innings with 112 from 106 balls as South Africa posted 297/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Breetzke was subsequently named Player of the Match for his contribution, while Nathan Ellis was Australia’s most successful bowler with figures of 3/57.
