Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar feature in Ravi Shastri’s India squad for ODI World Cup 2027

The 2027 ICC ODI World Cup is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive editions in the tournament’s history. With powerhouses such as Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan expected to mount strong title challenges, India will once again enter the event among the favourites. The Men in Blue came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy in 2023 before suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the final. This time, the responsibility is expected to rest on the shoulders of Shubman Gill, who is widely seen as India’s next long-term leader. Expectations will be immense as Gill aims to guide India to their first ODI World Cup triumph since 2011.

Ravi Shastri backs experience and youth in his 15-member squad

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, in a chat with Sportstak, has revealed his predicted 15-member squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, opting for a balanced mix of seasoned campaigners and exciting young stars capable of thriving under pressure.

As expected, Shastri named Gill as captain, signalling his faith in the stylish opener to lead India’s next generation. At the same time, the former coach threw his weight behind two of India’s biggest modern-day icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, believing their experience and ability to deliver on the grandest stage remain invaluable.

Shastri’s squad also features Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, providing India with a formidable batting unit. The all-round department is strengthened by Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, while the pace attack includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav also finds a place as India’s specialist spin option.

Perhaps the biggest talking point, however, is the inclusion of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The experienced seamer has been out of India’s plans for some time despite consistently producing impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. Shastri’s backing suggests he still sees Bhuvneshwar’s swing bowling, experience and calm temperament as valuable assets in major ICC tournaments.

Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav.

Fans expect Shubman Gill-led India to shine on the global stage

Shastri’s selection has generated plenty of discussion among cricket fans, with many praising the balance between youth and experience. Gill’s elevation to captaincy reflects the growing confidence in his leadership, while the continued presence of Rohit and Kohli highlights the importance of proven match-winners in ICC events. The return of Bhuvneshwar has emerged as another major talking point, with supporters believing his experience could prove decisive in helpful conditions across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

If Shastri’s predicted squad eventually resembles India’s final World Cup combination, fans will expect the team to play fearless cricket and mount a serious challenge for the coveted trophy. After the disappointment of 2023, Indian supporters will be hoping that Gill and his men can finally end the nation’s long wait for another ODI World Cup title.
