Indian batting legend Virat Kohli has finally opened up about the constant speculation surrounding his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. While Kohli has already retired from Tests and T20Is, questions over his future in ODI cricket have continued to dominate discussions, especially with the next 50-over World Cup still more than a year away. Speaking during the latest Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) podcast with Mayanti Langer, Kohli made it clear that he still wants to continue playing ODI cricket and representing India on the biggest stage.

Virat Kohli opens up on ODI World Cup 2027 plans

Kohli admitted that he has repeatedly been asked whether he wants to play in the ODI World Cup 2027, adding that there is no confusion on his part regarding his cricketing future. Kohli further explained that his preparation and commitment towards cricket have remained unchanged over the years.

“Of course, if I’m playing, I want to play cricket, I want to carry on. Playing a World Cup for India is amazing. If I’m made to feel like I need to prove my worth and my value, I’m not in that space. You want me to run from boundary to boundary for 40 overs in an ODI game, I will do that without a complaint,” Kohli said.

Kohli shuts down retirement rumours

Kohli’s comments are likely to put an end to growing retirement rumours surrounding his ODI career. Despite stepping away from two formats, the veteran continues to remain one of India’s most important players in 50-over cricket. The star batter has been in exceptional form recently, scoring heavily in ODIs as well as IPL 2026 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The veteran batter is currently among the leading run-scorers in IPL 2026, having smashed 484 runs in 12 innings, including a century and three half-centuries at a strike rate above 165. India’s next ODI assignment is scheduled against Afghanistan in June, followed by a three-match ODI series against England in July, where Kohli is expected to continue leading the batting lineup in the 50-over format.
