I knew I’d packed well for New York Fashion Week when the same Chanel jacket felt just as right for evening drinks as it did for a day of walking around the city. It’s one of those pieces that can be dressed up or down, made more ladylike and polished, or pushed somewhere a little more eccentric, all depending on what you put with it. That kind of versatility is what makes an investment feel worth it. Part of the pleasure is discovering how many different corners of your life it can work for.

Lately I’ve been saving things that live in that same realm, the ones you can imagine going casual for day and then taking to dinner with nothing more than a different shoe. What I look for are prints that feel rooted in the season, along with silhouettes and fabrics that don’t lean too far toward daytime or nighttime. Those are the pieces that keep earning their place, especially now that layers are back and accessories offer so many new ways to restyle them.
