Toy Story 5 Secures Major New Milestone Ahead Of Streaming Premiere

Toy Story 5 has less than a week left before its awaited Disney+ release date.

The unexpected fifth installment in the iconic Toy Story franchise hit theaters in June (and is still in theaters in some places). While not the best Toy Story movie, it maintained the franchise’s successful streak, with audiences and critics alike responding enthusiastically to the new installment’s focus on Jessie the cowgirl (Joan Cusack) and grappling with the role of technology in children’s lives.

Toy Story 5 has grossed $1.14 billion to date worldwide and has a critical approval rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It will more than likely be a streaming hit when it arrives on Disney+, where the previous four installments are available to stream, along with other tie-in properties — but already, Toy Story 5 is seeing significant post-theatrical success.

Toy Story 5 Is Already Hitting Milestones Before Its Disney+ Premiere

Toy Story 5 became available on VOD ahead of its streaming release, as is typical, allowing audiences options to purchase or rent it. While some prefer to wait until it is available through a subscription they already pay for, VOD is still a popular outlet. Swiftly, the sequel rose on the VOD charts, particularly on Amazon’s platform, where it hit a major milestone today.

Per FlixPatrol, at the time of writing, Toy Story 5 has been in the Top 25 movies on Amazon’s VOD charts for 30 days. Other recent movies seeing this kind of success include Backrooms (in the Top 25 for 65 days), Obsession (78 days), and Minions & Monsters (32 days). And it is clear that Toy Story 5‘s rental and purchase success could go on for much longer.

For instance, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, despite becoming available to stream on Peacock, has been in the Top 25 for more than 100 days. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also received significantly less favorable reviews than Toy Story 5 (42% on Rotten Tomatoes), releasing on April 1 this year and grossing $1.01 billion worldwide.

What Does The Franchise’s Future Look Like?

Toy Story is a franchise with the kind of longevity and place in Disney and Pixar’s history that means it can come back around on streaming every once in a while, with all the movies in the series climbing the charts because of an anniversary or another event. However, it is still very possible that more theatrical sequels could materialize.

Both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 seemed to be the end of the story before they got a follow-up. By now, no one is assuming anything. In an interview with ScreenRant, director Andrew Stanton teased some Toy Story 6 and beyond ideas, though no sequel is currently confirmed. “It’s like a series that doesn’t know it’s going to get picked up for the next season,” said Stanton.

While plenty may believe that Toy Story has gone on too long, it’s easy to understand why when the returns have never diminished, and the main cast, including original stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, have always been ready to reprise their roles. Thus, we have probably not seen the last of Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, and their story will continue to be a hit across various platforms.

Toy Story 5 will be available to stream on Disney+ on September 23, 2026.
