Top 5 highest individual scores in an ODI run chase ft. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has rewritten the record books with one of the greatest chasing performances in ODI cricket. The India captain smashed an unbeaten 223 against West Indies in Guwahati, powering India to a stunning chase of 406 and moving to the top of the list of the highest individual scores in an ODI run chase.Gill’s extraordinary knock pushed several legendary performances down the list. Glenn Maxwell’s unforgettable 201* against Afghanistan, Fakhar Zaman’s 193 against South Africa and Shane Watson’s blistering 185* are now among the remarkable innings sitting behind the Indian opener.

Here is a look at the top five individual scores in successful ODI run chases:

1. Shubman Gill – 223* vs West Indies, Guwahati, 2026

Gill’s unbeaten 223 is now the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. He produced the extraordinary innings while India chased West Indies’ mammoth 405/7 in the second ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

The India captain reached his double century in just 117 balls, breaking Ishan Kishan’s previous record for the fastest ODI double hundred. Gill eventually finished with 223 from 133 deliveries, smashing 26 fours and eight sixes.

What made the innings even more remarkable was the size of the target. India needed 406 to win but reached 406/2 in only 43.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.

Gill also received tremendous support from Rohit Sharma, who scored 101. The opening pair added 255 runs, laying the foundation for one of India’s most memorable ODI victories.  The 223* also made Gill only the second batter after Glenn Maxwell to score a double century while chasing in men’s ODIs.

2. Glenn Maxwell – 201* vs Afghanistan, Wankhede, 2023

Before Gill’s breathtaking effort, Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out was the benchmark for the highest individual score in an ODI chase.
Maxwell produced his famous innings against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai. Australia were in serious trouble during the chase, but Maxwell refused to give up.

Despite battling severe cramps and struggling physically, he continued attacking Afghanistan’s bowlers and dragged Australia from a desperate position to an extraordinary victory.

His unbeaten 201 came from 128 balls, and the innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes. Australia chased down Afghanistan’s 291 with eight wickets down.

For two years, Maxwell’s 201 stood as the highest individual score in an ODI chase. Gill has now moved beyond it with his 223*.

3. Fakhar Zaman – 193 vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2021

Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman occupies third place with a magnificent 193 against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2021.
Unlike Gill and Maxwell, Fakhar’s innings came in a match Pakistan ultimately lost. Chasing 342, Pakistan needed an extraordinary performance, and Fakhar almost produced it single-handedly.

He scored 193 from 155 balls, striking 18 fours and 10 sixes.

Fakhar took Pakistan remarkably close to the target, but his dismissal while attempting a second run ended the chase. South Africa won by 17 runs.
Despite the defeat, the innings remains one of the most spectacular individual performances in ODI cricket.

4. Shane Watson – 185* vs Bangladesh, Mirpur, 2011

Long before the recent era of massive ODI chases, Shane Watson delivered one of the format’s most destructive innings.
Watson smashed an unbeaten 185 from just 96 balls against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2011.

His innings was built around extraordinary power and clean hitting. Watson struck 15 fours and 15 sixes, producing a staggering strike rate of more than 192.

Watson’s 185* remained one of the finest examples of a batter completely dominating a chase, particularly because of the speed at which he scored his runs.

5. MS Dhoni – 183* vs Sri Lanka, Jaipur, 2005

MS Dhoni’s 183 not out against Sri Lanka in Jaipur in 2005 remains one of the defining innings of his international career.

Chasing Sri Lanka’s 298, India found themselves in trouble before Dhoni took control. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 183 from 145 balls, hitting 15 fours and 10 sixes.

His innings helped India chase down the target with six wickets and more than four overs remaining.

For years, Dhoni’s 183 was the highest individual score by an Indian batter in an ODI chase. It was eventually surpassed by Virat Kohli’s 183 against Pakistan in 2012 in terms of another Indian record context, while Gill’s latest 223 has now moved both legendary knocks further down the all-time chasing list.

5. Virat Kohli – 183 vs Pakistan, Mirpur, 2012

There is a tie for the fifth position, with Virat Kohli also scoring 183, against Pakistan during the 2012 Asia Cup in Mirpur.

Kohli’s innings came in a high-pressure chase of Pakistan’s imposing 329. India needed a huge contribution from their top order, and Kohli responded with one of the most memorable ODI innings of his career.

He scored 183 from 148 balls, smashing 22 fours and one six. His partnership with Sachin Tendulkar and later Rohit Sharma helped India complete the chase with 13 balls remaining.

The innings demonstrated Kohli’s ability to pace a chase perfectly — absorbing pressure early before taking control as the target came within reach.
