Boston Blue
Boston Blue – a spinoff of the longstanding police procedural series Blue Bloods – premiered on CBS and Paramount+ in mid-October and is currently about halfway through its first season, making now the perfect opportunity to dive in if you’ve been holding off. The sixth episode of Boston Blue’s 13 episodes just dropped this Friday, giving viewers the chance to binge the first half of this new crime drama this weekend.
Starring Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, and more, Boston Blue unsurprisingly takes place in Boston, MA, where Wahlberg and his brother Mark are famously from, which essentially makes it a must-watch for all New Englanders. The series follows former NYPD Detective Danny Reagan (Wahlberg), who joins the Boston PD and works to solve crimes with his new partner, Detective Lena Peters (Martin-Green).
Boston Blue has interestingly divided critics and at-home viewers, with the former giving the new series a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82%, compared to a 32% audience score. Variety gave it a positive review, noting, “A thoughtful and well-paced police procedural, “Boston Blue” expands the “Blue Bloods” universe into a new city, without losing the essence of the original.” Avoiding comparisons to Blue Bloods is likely the best way to enjoy Boston Blue this weekend.
Sexy Beast
The 2024 drama series Sexy Beast is another divisive series on Paramount+ worth checking out this weekend. Nearly the total opposite of Boston Blue’s reception, Sexy Beast was beloved by viewers and scorched by critics, earning just a 32% Rotten Tomatoes score compared to a much more favorable 87% audience score.
Based on the 2000 dark comedy heist movie of the same name, which starred Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, and more, Sexy Beast follows two East London thieves, Gal (James McArdle) and Don (Emun Elliott), who are recruited by a revered crime boss named Teddy Bass (Stephen Moyer) for a high-risk, high-reward job. Sexy Beast is not a remake of the original movie but rather acts as a prequel.
A common critique from critics was that Sexy Beast, the series, felt unnecessary and failed to live up to the original movie. However, the vast majority of viewers greatly enjoyed it as the fun British comedy show it aimed to be. At just 8 episodes, Sexy Beast is the ideal length for an immersive and enjoyable binge-watch this weekend on Paramount+. As far as its quality, viewers will have to determine which side they’re on between critics and audiences.
Tulsa King
Tulsa King has been one of the most popular original series on Paramount+ for years since its initial release in 2022. The series is currently the #2 most-watched show on Paramount+ around the world, ranking second only to South Park at the time of writing (via Flix Patrol), and will drop its season 3 finale this Sunday.
Starring the incomparable Sylvester Stallone as Dwight Manfredi, a feared New York Mafia capo who is fresh off his 25-year prison sentence, Tulsa King is one of Taylor Sheridan’s multiple Paramount+ original series. Stallone is joined by an exceptional cast that includes Martin Starr, Garrett Hedlund, Dana Delany, Frank Grillo, and season 3’s latest addition, Samuel L. Jackson – whose spinoff series NOLA King will begin production next year.
Stallone is a tour de force in Tulsa King, the first multi-season TV series he’s ever starred in. While the show isn’t as gritty as Sheridan’s other crime drama, Mayor of Kingstown, it offers a solid balance between drama and action, with a general tone more akin to Landman. For Stallone and Sheridan fans, Tulsa King is a must-watch, and there couldn’t be a better time to binge the whole series than this weekend, with the season 3 finale just days away on Paramount+.
