Tony Stark’s New Iron Man Codename Officially Revealed by Marvel

Iron Man is one of the most iconic and hard-hitting codenames in comic book history. However, Marvel has just reimagined Tony Stark in a major way, resulting in not only the latest variation of his Iron Man armor, but a new codename as well. And while we’d usually bemoan a codename change (because why fix what isn’t broken?), this codename update is nothing short of exceptional.

This summer, Marvel Comics launched one of its most ambitious reimaginings of the Marvel Universe in writer Preeti Chhibber, artist Lorenzo Tammetta, and colorist Rod Fernandes’ Realmguard Infinity Comic. This limited series took a page out of DC’s book by reimagining its heroes and villains in a high-fantasy setting.

DC’s high-fantasy Elseworlds series originally launched in 2021 with writer Tom Taylor and artist Yasmine Putri’s Dark Knights of Steel. The series was met with such a positive fan reception that it earned itself a Deathstroke-starring spin-off, Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter, by writer Jay Kristoff and artist Tirso. This year even saw the return of Tom Taylor’s main series, this time alongside artist Otto Schmidt in Dark Knights of Steel II.

Now, Marvel has launched its own high-fantasy universe, reimagining some of the comic publisher’s most iconic heroes and villains. Among some of the most notable names to debut in the series were Spider-Man, Mystique, Bucky Barnes, Scarlet Witch, and, of course, Iron Man. However, in this series, Tony Stark doesn’t go by Iron Man, but rather Iron Mechanist.

Like the name Iron Mechanist suggests, Tony is a legendary mechanist in this alternate universe and a bit of a hermit. Realmguard Infinity Comic #2 reveals that Tony is typically squirreled away in his tower, inventing and building his machines and only leaving when the King summons him. Tony being a brilliant mechanist with hermit tendencies is beyond perfect for this fantasy setting.

And while “Iron Man” will always be classic and unbeatable, there’s no denying that Iron Mechanist has a more legendary sound to it. This new codename is perfect for this high-fantasy setting and will likely be well-received by fans. Given that this change takes place in a different universe from Marvel’s main one, there will be no impact on or rewriting of the decades’ worth of history behind Tony Stark’s Iron Man identity.

Hence, this is a situation where fans can have their cake and eat it too, allowing them to enjoy this new twist on Tony without it impacting the decades of history behind the Iron Man name. And, of course, with a high-fantasy-inspired codename, Tony also got a high-fantasy redesign, and it is nothing short of badass.

The suit in Realmguard Infinity Comic is still recognizable, but it’s far bulkier and less refined, a design choice that perfectly speaks to a less technically advanced setting. Meanwhile, the armor has several design details that give it a distinctly “knightly armor” feel. In short, this Iron Man design and codename change-up gets a 10/10 from us.
