Sydney Sixers have strengthened their batting lineup with the signing of New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert for Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27. The 31-year-old has agreed to a one-year deal with the three-time Big Bash champions after spending the last two seasons with Melbourne Renegades.

Seifert arrives at the Sixers after a standout campaign in The Hundred, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He played a match-winning role for Manchester Super Giants (MSG) in the final against Trent Rockets at Lord’s, scoring 72 off 38 balls to help his side secure their maiden title.

Tim Seifert adds experience to Sydney Sixers’ batting lineup

Seifert has played 20 matches in the Big Bash League, all of them for Melbourne Renegades since making his debut in BBL|14. He has scored 485 runs in the competition, with his best performance coming in the opening game of BBL|15 when he smashed 102 off 56 balls against Brisbane Heat in Geelong.

His arrival gives the Sixers another experienced option at the top of the order, particularly with Australian star Steve Smith expected to miss the entirety of BBL|16 due to national commitments. The wicketkeeper-batter also brings plenty of experience from franchise cricket around the world, having featured in the IPL, PSL, CPL, The Hundred and MLC.

The move could also create an interesting situation around the wicketkeeping role. Josh Philippe has been an important part of the Sixers’ setup and has experience both behind the stumps and as a specialist batter, leaving the franchise with multiple options heading into the new season.

Seifert arrives after impressive international and Hundred form

The New Zealand international has been in excellent form across formats of T20 cricket. He scored 326 runs at the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, including four fifties, as New Zealand reached the final. Seifert has also established himself as one of New Zealand’s leading T20I batters. Since making his international debut in 2018, he has played 90 T20Is and accumulated 2,279 runs, placing him fourth on the country’s all-time run-scoring list in the format.

His recent performances for Manchester Super Giants further strengthened his reputation as a destructive T20 batter. After producing a decisive innings in the Hundred final and winning the Player of the Tournament award, Seifert will head into BBL|16 with considerable momentum.
