Stylistically, there are essentially no directors in Hollywood that are quite like Tim Burton. The filmmaker is known for movies like Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), and Sleepy Hollow (1999), among others, with many of his movies featuring a gothic and distinct tone and visual style. Most recently, the director released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), which was a major hit, but the film is a far cry from some of his more violent earlier works, including a 2007 title starring frequent collaborator Johnny Depp.

19 years after its bow in theaters, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has now gotten a major new physical media release. Per Blu-ray.com, the horror movie is now available on 4K UHD in a limited edition steelbook. The steelbook, priced at $35.19 on Amazon, comes with the 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs, as well as a digital copy of the movie.

Burton’s Sweeney Todd Just Got A Major New Upgrade

Sweeney Todd has been available on 4K since 2024, but the limited edition steelbook features a new front and back cover design, which may be of interest to collectors. The steelbook packaging is also more durable than the standard plastic 4K cases. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, and Sacha Baron Cohen, Sweeney Todd marked Burton’s follow-up to Corpse Bride (2005), and it traded that film’s PG rating for an R.

Sweeney Todd tells the story of the titular barber, played by Depp, who sets out on a mission for revenge after being wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his wife. The movie is rated R for graphic bloody violence and is in line with Sleepy Hollow in terms of its violent content, but, unlike that film, Sweeney Todd is also a musical.

The Film Is A Rare Musical Adaptation Beloved By Its Creator

Sweeney Todd is based on Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 musical of the same name, which was itself based on a 1970 play by Christopher Bond. Burton’s film adaptation earned mostly positive reviews from critics and has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also a box office success, grossing $153 million worldwide. What’s more, Sondheim himself has fully endorsed it. Of Burton’s adaptation, Sondheim told The Georgia Straight in 2007:

“Tim understands that the audience needs to be entertained while the song is being sung. […] I have no regrets at all. I’m not embarrassed by any of it.”

Though Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street may not be everyone’s pick for the best Burton movie, it is oozing with the director’s signature gothic stylings, and it remains a notable entry in his filmography. For those who enjoy the movie, the new steelbook release seems like the best possible way to own and enjoy the film for years to come.
