The Wheel of Time spent more than two decades building toward Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle between the forces of the Light and the Dark One. That enormous confrontation finally arrived in A Memory of Light, the 14th and final mainline novel, published in January 2013 and completed by Brandon Sanderson using material left behind by Robert Jordan.
The sprawling The Last Battle chapter brought together characters and conflicts established across the entire series, with the book’s emotional conclusion earning considerable praise from longtime readers, even as some debated individual character resolutions, pacing, and unanswered questions.
Amazon’s The Wheel of Time appeared poised to eventually offer its own interpretation of Tarmon Gai’don, but the television adaptation was canceled after three seasons, long before it could reach the saga’s ending. Now, nearly 14 years after A Memory of Light, The Wheel of Time is preparing to revisit and potentially rewrite the Last Battle in an entirely different form.
The Wheel Of Time Fans Return To Tarmon Gai’don In New Release
War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time gives fans something the novels never could, which is the opportunity to decide how the road to Tarmon Gai’don unfolds for themselves. Dire Wolf’s two-player strategy game draws from all 14 mainline novels, with its central conflict beginning around the events of The Shadow Rising and eventually carrying the Light and Shadow all the way to the Last Battle.
That journey is not locked to Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s original timeline, however. Players build their own version of the Pattern through area control, character development, forming alliances, completing missions, and through story events inspired by major moments from the books. Dire Wolf describes each game as essentially another turning of the Wheel, allowing familiar events and characters to take different paths depending on players’ decisions.
That flexibility becomes especially important in Epic Mode, where the Light player develops their heroes and gathers forces while the Shadow player can free the Forsaken from the Dark One’s Prison, with both sides commanding armies across the Westlands. After four chapters, everything culminates in a massive version of the Last Battle in which every army, character, objective, and strategic decision made beforehand can affect the final confrontation.
In that sense, War of the Dragon lets fans effectively rewrite Tarmon Gai’don and discover whether their version ends anything like the books.
War Of The Dragon Arrives In 2027
War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time does not have one firm worldwide release date, but Dire Wolf is targeting 2027 for both crowdfunding fulfillment and its wider retail arrival. According to the game’s Kickstarter FAQ, shipments are currently expected to leave the factory before the end of 2026, with fulfillment for U.S. backers planned for the first half of 2027. International deliveries may take several additional weeks (or even months), although Dire Wolf expects all Kickstarter backers to have their copies by the end of 2027.
Fans who missed the crowdfunding campaign will still have an opportunity to pick up the game afterward. The standard Dragon Reborn Edition is scheduled to become available through participating local game stores and Dire Wolf’s international localization partners sometime in 2027. It’s one of the most highly anticipated new releases for The Wheel of Time franchise, and fans are surely counting down the days.
