Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Rookie season 8, episode 15, “Survive the Streets.”ABC has found a winner in The Rookie, but the procedural is slowly killing itself. Created by Alexi Hawley, the show is currently the third longest-running show on the network — proof of its enduring popularity amid the changing industry. While not always a Live+Same Day chart-topper, The Rookie‘s success is rooted in its streaming availability, not to mention its virality on social media, which explains its growing younger demographic in the 2025-2026 TV cycle.
When The Rookie debuted in 2018, it broke the network TV procedural norm by not being a traditional police show centered on a single kind of team like NCIS and Law & Order: SVU. Nearly a decade later, it has evolved its storytelling beyond its titular character — Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan. Other characters have had their own compelling stories that are interconnected with its weekly cases. Unfortunately, based on The Rookie season 8‘s storytelling direction, the series is gradually dying.
The Rookie Season 8, Episode 15 Is An Amalgamation Of Everything Killing The Show
Marking its fifth time in its run, The Rookie brings back the documentary-style episode with “Survive the Streets.” As if this storytelling approach isn’t already divisive enough, the show makes it worse with a couple of more factors that have been historically controversial. For context, this type of format is among the lowest-rated outings for the procedurals, and despite that, ABC refuses to give up on this The Rookie gimmick.
Getting into the smaller details of the outing, the fact that they don’t even pair up Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford is another major disappointment, given past events. This is actually a symptom of a bigger problem when it comes to The Rookie forgetting some of its fan-favorite partnerships being sidelined.
The Rookie Is Reclaiming Its Lost Glory By Going Back To Basics
As the ABC show has become more ambitious, it has lost sight of the basics of a police procedural. Thankfully, The Rookie is doing something about it.
Beyond that, “Survive the Streets” also highlights one of the more persisting issues of The Rookie season 8 — the lack of focus on Miles Penn. Fillion will always be the show’s lead star, but as he moves up the ranks, he no longer fits as the central character of the show. For a while, Celina fit the bill, and because she was paired with Nolan, her earliest time on the project properly developed her character.
Unfortunately, not only is Miles not given the same focus, he also missed several episodes of The Rookie season 8 altogether. As part of the new generation of players, it’s important that ABC develops Miles to help with the project’s long-term sustainability.
How ABC Can Stop The Rookie From Slowly Dying
The Rookie‘s season 9 renewal took a while compared to its peers, but ABC has finally confirmed its return for the 2026-2027 TV cycle, which is a good thing. However, it’s integral that Hawley and his team recognize these issues before it’s too late. Fans have always been vocal about their criticisms of the documentary-style episodes, which is reflected in those outings’ score on IMDb. This doesn’t mean that the show has to stop them altogether, and it’s certainly appreciated that the series is being creative, but hopefully, some tweaks are made to finally make them effective.
Secondly, it’s imperative that The Rookie does something compelling for Miles. While he’s the newest member of the Mid-Wilshire crew and there’s understandably more investment in other characters that have been on the series for far longer, developing him is vital to the show’s future. Cast rotations are not new on network TV projects, especially long-running ensembles. It’s better for The Rookie to diversify its storytelling to ensure that it can survive if the time comes that it has to go through character departures.
