Blumhouse’s The Purge returns in 2027 with a new multi-episode installment. Since 2013, Blumhouse has transformed a micro-budget home-invasion concept into a massive multi-million dollar global phenomenon with the Purge franchise. The underlying premise of a dystopian America where all crime is legal for twelve hours every year struck a chord with mainstream audiences, leading to a five-movie saga and a multi-season television adaptation. Across a little over a decade, the Purge franchise has evolved from suspense thrillers to action-packed slasher movies.
Despite its popularity, The Purge 6 aims to be the definitive final chapter of the franchise. Series creator James DeMonaco has completed the screenplay and handed it over to producers Jason Blum. Set directly after the chaotic events of The Forever Purge, The Purge 6 picks up in a collapsed society where the traditional twelve-hour time limit is a thing of the past in a world with no expiration date on violence, and a remapped United States has been divided into isolated states divided by ideology. So far, Frank Grillo is expected to reprise his role as Sergeant Leo Barnes.
Before The Purge 6 hits theaters, Blumhouse is teaming up with another company to release a Purge series that explores other corners of the franchise.
The Purge Gets Its Own Comic Adaptation In 2027
Blumhouse And IDW Entertainment Bring The Purge Franchise To The Comic Medium Next Year
Announced at New York Comic-Con 2026, Blumhouse is partnering with IDW to launch a new horror comic lineup under the IDW Dark imprint, with The Purge leading the initiative in late 2027. This marks the very first time the massive dystopian movie franchise will transition into a different format to live-action. The upcoming The Purge comic series is written by Batman: Dark Patterns writer Dan Watters and illustrated by Robocop artist Juan José Ryp. Plot info is yet to be revealed, but this new series is teased to dive into a completely unexplored corner of the New Founding Fathers’ America.
IDW’s upcoming The Purge comic opens up fascinating avenues for storytelling, as a comic format can easily portray large-scale chaos much more easily and effectively than all previous movies. The psychological delusion of the citizens who participate in the annual night of legal murder may take center stage, either following a personal vendetta or a city-wide war during the most brutal night of the year. So far, how IDW’s The Purge comic will tie into the movies and show has yet to be confirmed.
M3GAN And Happy Death Day Are Also Getting Horror Comic Adaptations
Two Other Blumhouse Hits Are Getting Their Own Comic Series
The horror collaboration between Blumhouse and IDW Publishing will also deliver comic book adaptations for both M3GAN and Happy Death Day under the new IDW Dark imprint, the latter penned by Hack/Slash writer Tim Seeley. Both projects aim to capture the unique blend of dark humor and suspense that made the original theatrical releases successful hits. These series can be expected to launch alongside Dan Watters and Juan José Ryp’s The Purge as part of a multi-title comic rollout in 2027.
IDW’s M3GAN series offers the ideal opportunity to explore the inner consciousness of the titular AI doll. The comic book format can easily illustrate her rogue programming and her encounters with a brand-new set of tech-obsessed victims before she faces off against her creators in the upcoming live-action movie sequels. Meanwhile, the Happy Death Day comic could expand upon its signature time-loop mechanics with more over-the-top deaths for its protagonist Tree Gelbman, or alternatively, introduce an entirely new character trapped in a temporal nightmare of their own.
