The spirit of The Office is still alive through its spinoff, which officially comes back in two weeks. Along with the still-ongoing trend of reboots and revivals is a trend of spinoffs, and no genre is safe from it. However, it’s a lot more difficult for a spinoff to succeed than a reboot or revival, especially when it comes to sitcoms. Shows like Cheers, Roseanne, and The Big Bang Theory have successful spinoffs, and joining them is The Office.

Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office is a British mockumentary sitcom that aired for two seasons from 2001 to 2003. Two years after its end, The Office got an American remake developed by Greg Daniels and starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott. The Office went on to become one of the best sitcoms of all time, and ran for nine seasons, ending in 2013. Over a decade later, the world of The Office expanded with the spinoff The Paper, created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman.

The Paper has the same mockumentary style as The Office, serving as both a follow-up and spinoff to the Michael Scott-led show, so much so that the same documentary crew that followed the Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, Pennsylvania crew is the one following the new characters. The Paper premiered on Peacock in September 2025 and was renewed for a second season ahead of its premiere, and the new episodes are ready to see the light of day.

The Paper Returns With Its Second Season In September 2026

The Paper takes the audience to Toledo, Ohio, to follow the crew of the Toledo Truth Teller, a historic regional newspaper that is currently struggling. The Truth Teller has been kept afloat through clickbait and trivial content, but it has hired a new Editor-in-Chief: Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), a former toilet paper salesman. Sampson hopes to revive the Truth Teller and return it to its former glory, much to the resistance of Managing Editor Esmeralda Grand (Sabrina Impacciatore) and the company’s corporate strategist, Ken Davies (Tim Key).

Ned ends up convincing the company and the newspaper staff to volunteer as reporters to help rebuild the Truth Teller, and so his mission to save the newspaper officially begins. Of course, there’s a lot of fun and chaos involved as Ned’s enthusiasm and hope clash with Esmeralda’s opposing views, all while the crew does its best to practice journalism with little to no resources. At the time of writing, The Paper holds an 85% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been praised for its comedy and performances.

As mentioned above, The Paper was renewed for a second season before its premiere, and its positive critical reception, along with solid viewership numbers, justified that decision. The Paper is now coming back on Peacock on September 9, 2026, with all 10 episodes released that day, so fans of the show can prepare to binge-watch the new season.

What Will The Paper Season 2 Be About?

The ending of The Paper season 1 perfectly sets up the second season with a huge win for the Truth Teller and some romance for Ned. In the season finale, the crew attended the Ohio Journalism Awards, where the Truth Teller surprised attendees and its own team by winning three prizes: Outstanding Print Coverage, Best News Story, and Best New Game. On top of that, Ned and journalist Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) finally kissed after some very obvious attraction between them, but they will choose to keep their romance secret (for a while, at least).

Season 2 of The Paper will see Ned and the Truth Teller crew doing their best to carry on with their winning streak and trying new things to keep the newspaper afloat. Meanwhile, Esmeralda will continue to try to take credit where it’s definitely not due, while the team gradually improves as reporters. The Paper season 2 is ready for its release, and, hopefully, it will be even better than season 1 and will grant the show at least one more season.
