The Elder Scrolls 6 Title Officially Teased

While it was always expected that The Elder Scrolls 6 would inevitably have a subtitle, Bethesda spent years referring to the game without any attached. Elder Scrolls subtitles have traditionally offered key information about the game’s setting, although Oblivion‘s refers to the gates to hell rather than the primary setting of Cyrodiil. As a result, the full title for The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a major benchmark of the game’s progress, likely signifying an official reveal of the setting.

In the eight years since the game’s official reveal at E3 2018, Bethesda has been quiet on the subject of a full title for The Elder Scrolls 6, despite speculation and rumors about its setting running rampant. Since XBOX’s new CEO Asha Sharma stepped into the role, however, communication about the game has started to shift a bit. Now, Sharma has teased the full title, although she’s still stopping short of telling fans what they want to hear.

In an X post today, Sharma spoke of a “Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ********,” indicating the presence of the game’s subtitle with the use of eight asterisks. While it still isn’t a title reveal, it’s somehow the closest thing we’ve had to one since the game’s announcement in 2018.

In all likelihood, the use of eight asterisks in particular doesn’t mean anything, but it’s still enough to fuel speculation. If each asterisk is replacing a letter (and ignoring a space), they could stand for “High Rock,” a northwestern region of Tamriel that is speculated to appear in the game.

At the same time, High Rock doesn’t ultimately seem like a likely name for The Elder Scrolls 6. If the game does visit High Rock, it’s also expected to visit Hammerfell, a larger kingdom with a more impactful name. There’s a reasonable chance that the full title could be The Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell, as long as the asterisks don’t mean anything after all.

As Oblivion established, though, the title could also refer to something else entirely. One recent fan title proposal was Sentinel, which would fit the asterisk count. At the end of the day, our knowledge of the title is essentially no more advanced than it was before. Every The Elder Scrolls 6 tease is tantalizing, but they’re rarely any more substantial than this.

Nonetheless, there’s still one takeaway to be had here. Sharma is clearly referencing the existence of a full title for The Elder Scrolls 6, so it seems like Bethesda has, indeed, decided on one. When the company will decide to share that information with the world, however, is anyone’s guess.
