The DCU Has Spent The Last Month Setting Up James Gunn’s Batman, & More Is On The Way

James Gunn’s DC Universe is still waiting to properly introduce Batman, but the setup for Bruce Wayne’s role has intensified over the last month, with more to come in October. When Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran announced the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods & Monsters slate, Batman was confirmed as a pillar of the universe with a new solo film, The Brave and the Bold.

Fast-forward a few years, and the DCU is rapidly expanding. Superman kicked off the franchise’s movie slate, which continued earlier this year with Supergirl. The TV side of the slate has been busier, with Creature Commandos season 1 launching the DCU, followed by Peacemaker season 2. Now, it has been Lanterns that has kept DC fans busy with a detective-oriented story with Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Bruce Wayne does not really factor into any of these productions, even if Creature Commandos season 1 included Batman’s DCU debut, with a brief single scene. The limited nature of his role has left viewers yearning to see The Dark Knight in action in a larger form, especially as Superman became the center of the universe and rumors of Wonder Woman’s debut continue to mount.

While The Brave and the Bold‘s status and the overall plan for Batman are routinely drawn into question, 2026 has proven Gunn’s DCU has not forgotten about him. There have been significant steps taken over the last few months to plant seeds for The Caped Crusader’s existence and life. It shows that even without a physical appearance, Batman’s presence looms large in the DCU.

Batman Has Been Teased Multiple Times In Lanterns

The World’s Greatest Detective isn’t in Lanterns, but the HBO series has not-so-subtly had lots of connections to Batman’s side of the universe. For as much as the show focuses on explaining the Green Lanterns mythology, it has also gone out of its way multiple times to include details that set the stage for Batman.

Lanterns revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane previously lived in Gotham City, which she left after a criminal organization killed her father. The crime group is not mentioned by name, but Gotham is filled with mob bosses and more who could be responsible. The backstory is a clever way of setting the stage for why this city would need a protector like Batman to rise from the shadows.

The show used Kerry to set up more of Gotham’s history by confirming she is a member of the Kane family. In the comics, there is a prominent family in Gotham with that last name. Beyond what they did to shape the city, the Kanes have significant Batman ties. Martha Wayne was from this family before marrying Thomas Wayne, potentially making Kerry’s father Bruce’s uncle in the DCU. Kerry could also be related to Kate Kane, who becomes Batwoman.

Kerry’s ties to Gotham may run even deeper. Lanterns‘ first episode showed Kerry talking to someone on the phone and telling them to tell Barb she says hi. Knowing that she’s from Gotham, speculation has turned to her talking to Gotham PD’s Jim Gordon, possibly referencing his daughter, Barbara Gordon, who becomes Batgirl.

Moving past Kerry and Gotham, Lanterns episode 6 included a definitive Batman reference. Hal mentions that Guy Gardner put a Green Lantern signal in Rushville, copying “that bat guy in Gotham.” This confirms that not only is Batman very active in the DCU during 2026, but he’s established enough to have a Bat-signal up and running in Gotham and be widely known for someone as out-of-touch as Hal.

With a few episodes of Lanterns still to go, its setup for Batman may not be over. Even if it is, the DCU’s plans to tease the iconic vigilante this year will continue.

Clayface Has More Set Up For The DCU’s Batman (Even Without A Bruce Wayne Role)

DC Studios will end its 2026 DCU slate with Clayface on October 23 and drop more Batman hints along the way. It’s already confirmed that Bruce won’t appear in or out of the Batsuit for the R-rated horror movie. But the characters and story Clayface does include still have plenty of importance for Batman’s DCU future.

This includes the franchise’s first trip to Gotham City. References to it have come in everything from Superman to Lanterns, but audiences have yet to catch a proper glimpse of Batman’s hometown. Clayface changes that by bringing audiences to the city and showing everything from the criminal underside that Batman battles to the life of rich and famous men that Bruce belongs to. Clayface‘s trailers indicate more of the former.

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. His uncredited collaborator wrote much of the original story, designed the cowl and cape, invented the name “Bruce Wayne,” named Gotham City, and helped create the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. DC finally added his name to all Batman credits in 2015. Who?

02

Batman: The Movie — released in July 1966 between the first and second seasons of the ABC TV series, featuring the “Holy Whatever, Batman!” tone, the four super-villain team-up (Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman), the shark-repellent Bat-spray, and the Batmobile/Batboat/Batcopter — is generally considered the first theatrical Batman feature film. Two earlier 1940s movie serials don’t qualify as standalone features. Which actor played Batman in this first theatrical feature?

03

Batman: The Animated Series (Fox Kids, 1992–1995) — the Bruce Timm/Eric Radomski production with the deco-noir “Dark Deco” backgrounds painted on black paper — is consistently ranked by fans and creators as the definitive screen Batman. Its central performance is so iconic that the actor reprised it across 30 years, every DC Animated Universe series, and a dozen Arkham-series video games. He died on November 10, 2022, and DC essentially treated his passing as the death of Batman’s voice. Name him.

04

Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) earned him an estimated $60–$90 million from a film for which his actual on-screen salary was a fairly modest $6 million — making it, dollar-for-dollar, one of the most famously lucrative single roles in Hollywood history. He achieved this by negotiating an unusual deal structure that other actors immediately tried (and largely failed) to copy. What was it?

05

After Ben Affleck stepped down from his planned solo Batman film, Warner Bros. handed the project to a new director who reconceived it as a noir-detective serial-killer story modelled on Se7en and Zodiac, runs 2h 56min, casts Robert Pattinson as a brooding second-year Bruce Wayne, and gives Paul Dano’s Riddler a Zodiac-style cipher gimmick. The Batman (2022) grossed $772 million worldwide. Who directed it?

06

Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997) — with Bat-nipples on the suit, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze spitting ice puns (“Let’s kick some ice!”), Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl, and an estimated $238 million box-office failure on a $125 million budget — is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. It killed the live-action Batman franchise for eight years until Batman Begins (2005). Who played Batman in it?

07

Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?

08

Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) — the standalone, R-rated, $1.07-billion-grossing Joaquin Phoenix vehicle that exists outside any DC continuity — was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, the most of any comic-book-derived film at the time. It won Best Actor for Phoenix. It also won exactly one other Oscar that night. Which?

World’s Greatest Detective — or a Gotham red herring?

On top of seeing Gotham, Clayface will go a long way in setting up Batman by showcasing one of his villains. The shape-shifting foe was previously featured in Creature Commandos, but the movie will give audiences his origin story. The prequel setting could mean it takes place at a time when Bruce has not yet become Batman. Even so, what Matt Hagen does as Clayface could play a role in Bruce’s decision to become Gotham’s protector.

Beyond those confirmed details, there are ample opportunities for Clayface to tease more of Batman’s corner of the DCU. Mentions of Wayne Enterprises, regular criminal groups like the Cobblepots or Falcones, and more could come to better set the stage for The Brave and the Bold and Batman’s debut.

When Will James Gunn’s DCU Properly Introduce Batman?

With so much teasing of Batman going on in the DCU in 2026, it makes the Dark Knight’s absence all the more noticeable. This will continue with Gunn confirming Batman won’t be in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. This comes amid great anticipation for Bruce to join the franchise and to learn who will play him. Unfortunately, it might still be a few years before we get to see Batman in the DCU.

Development on The Brave and the Bold has moved slower than anticipated, but that’s at least partially due to what’s happened with The Batman Part II. Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s sequel was meant to come out in 2025 before multiple delays pushed it to its current release date of February 18, 2028. The DCU’s Batman plans have been impacted due to Gunn wanting to space out appearances between Pattinson’s Batman and whoever dons the cowl in the shared universe.

With The Brave and the Bold not in a place to meet a surprise 2027 release date, the best cast scenario for Batman’s DCU debut is arguably 2029. That’d be a full year after The Batman Part II and give DC Studios more time to refine its approach for a separate Batman franchise. The only way Batman joins the DCU sooner is if he makes his live-action debut before his first solo film, such as a potential Lanterns season 2.
