The Boys Video Game Nobody Talks About Is Still Worth Playing

After seven years and five seasons of television, as well as two seasons of a spin-off series, The Boys has finally ended. Of course, Amazon Prime Video isn’t idly allowing the immense popularity of The Boys to go to waste, with the prequel series Vought Rising starring Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy scheduled to be released sometime in 2027, and it’s unknown what other TV shows or content could appear in the future in order to prolong the vulgar ‘superhero’ franchise’s shelf life.

That said, like Netflix’s Stranger Things, The Boys’ popularity may already be fading away naturally. The Boys has had several video game crossovers, such as in Rainbow Six: Siege, Call of Duty, and Mortal Kombat 1, but it seems as if not many fans knew that there is an official Boys game that was released only a few months ago.

Released at the end of March, The Boys: Trigger Warning is a VR-exclusive game developed by ARVORE and published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality for Meta Quest 3/3S, though it was recently released for PS VR2 earlier this month. However, despite these individual launches, it doesn’t seem as if The Boys: Trigger Warning was on fans’ radars at all.

The Boys’ showrunners and writers—including Supernatural’s Eric Kripke—lending their talents and expertise to the game gives a stamp of authenticity to The Boys: Trigger Warning, which boasts an original story and features some of the TV show’s actors reprising their roles. On Reddit, user WhatYouThinkYouSee is surprised that they haven’t heard anyone discuss the game since it came out, while user notsobillyhandsome exclaims, “It released????”

According to fans, the largest factor determining why The Boys: Trigger Warning came and went without any hubbub is that it is VR-exclusive, and thus, its playerbase pool was always going to be smaller. User String-Tree describes this game’s unfortunate circumstances aptly: “VR is a niche within a niche. A VR The Boys game is a niche within a niche within a niche.”

Camouflaj’s Batman: Arkham Shadow is a VR-exclusive game, and, if a brand-new entry in one of the most adored and celebrated superhero video game franchises of all time couldn’t compel every gamer to buy a Meta Quest 3/3S, the likelihood that fans would be keeping tabs on a VR Boys game, of all things, was low.

Likewise, poor marketing could be to blame. User Harry-Henderson83 writes, “I had no idea this was a thing until right now,” for example, and user SuperRandomGuy_00 remembers the marketing only ever being incredibly sparse. Even lately, with The Boys: Trigger Warning releasing on PS VR2, fans have arguably had to seek its marketing out, rather than the other way around.

It’s possible that a flatscreen Boys game could generate excitement, but it might be too late for one to accompany the TV show in the popular culture zeitgeist when The Boys itself is no longer at the height of its popularity. It might’ve been able to have its second wind now that more fans are conscious of it, too, if not for how poorly The Boys: Trigger Warning is being received.
