Yellowstone should not have ended the way it did. After five incredible seasons of the Duttons ruthlessly fighting to defend their ranch and legacy, the show completely collapsed upon itself following Kevin Costner’s abrupt exit as protagonist John Dutton. This, of course, was never Taylor Sheridan’s plan, and the Yellowstone co-creator was forced to change the entire story for the show’s final season, resulting in the Dutton patriarch’s abrupt death in the second half of season 5.
This was a losing battle no matter what, but the way in which John was killed — off-screen by a squad of faceless assassins — was a weak choice for the character, and the show never recovered. Without the anchor of its stoic protagonist, Yellowstone ended with a whimper when it should have gone out with a bang that rang out across the Montana plains.
However, while the original series is over, the Yellowstone franchise lives on in multiple spinoffs. Prequel series 1883 and 1923 aired while Yellowstone was still running, and earlier this year, John’s youngest son, Kayce Dutton, starred in his own new show, Marshals, which has already been greenlit for a second season. However, the most exciting Yellowstone spinoff is the upcoming Dutton Ranch.
Premiering on May 15, 2026, on Paramount+, Dutton Ranch continues the story of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, John’s only daughter and his loyal enforcer, whom he loved like a son. Having left Montana and “the ghosts of Yellowstone” behind for a quiet ranch life in South Texas, Beth and Rip face the new, harsh challenges of starting over, including facing off against a rival ranch.
A premise like this makes Dutton Ranch the perfect replacement for Yellowstone season 6 because it’s a direct continuation of the story. Whereas Marshals is completely different as a police procedural airing on broadcast television, Paramount+’s Dutton Ranch upholds Yellowstone‘s gritty, brutal tone and embraces its themes of fighting for land and legacy. It’s also set up to be a much better show than what Yellowstone season 6 would have been.
Dutton Ranch Serves As Yellowstone Season 6 Without The Weight Of John Dutton
The problem with John Dutton’s death in Yellowstone season 5, part 2 wasn’t just the absence of the show’s protagonist. Even though many of Yellowstone‘s best characters remained, from Beth and Rip to Kayce to the Teeter and the bunkhouse cowboys, they were all tied to and shaped by John. Without him, they were left floundering.
When John died, so did the stakes of Yellowstone. Sure, Beth and Kayce served as their father’s loyal soldiers in defending their family property, but they were only doing so out of loyalty to John. Neither sibling wanted the ranch, and certainly not the battle it took to keep it.
If Yellowstone had continued with season 6, the ghost of John would have torn apart the series even further. Yellowstone already tarnished its own legacy with its poor ending, so more story would have also ruined the show’s fantastic characters.
However, with Dutton Ranch, the franchise keeps all the best parts of Yellowstone while shaking off the shackles of John’s death. Of course, his impact will still be felt, as both Beth and Rip were the two people who loved him the fiercest, but Dutton Ranch is their show, and it will be defined by who they are as individuals and as husband and wife.

It was also a brilliant decision to have the couple relocate from Montana to Texas. Remaining in their home state would have felt too similar to Yellowstone, with friends and foes likely being the same characters we’ve already seen. However, Dutton Ranch provides a fresh start with a new cast, including Ed Harris as Everett McKinney, a compassionate veterinarian, and Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, the conniving owner of a rival ranch.
Watching Bening and Kelly Reilly go head-to-head is worth the price of admission alone, if the Dutton Ranch teaser trailer is any indication. Beyond that, the spinoff is giving two beloved Yellowstone characters the story they deserve, and is the best chance at the franchise restoring its legacy. Now that’s something John Dutton would tip his hat to.
