Taylor Sheridan Won An Acting Role After Threatening Another Actor That He Would “Knock You The F-k Out”

One punch landed Taylor Sheridan an acting gig.

In 2018, Sheridan launched Yellowstone on Paramount Network, effectively reviving the neo-Western genre by finding a modern audience for it. Spearheaded by Kevin Costner as the Dutton family patriarch, John III, the show has spawned multiple spinoffs, including two of the most popular shows in the 2025-2026 TV cycle — Luke Grimes’ Marshals on CBS and Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Dutton Ranch on Paramount+. The success of the flagship emboldened him to launch other projects in the touted Sheridanverse, with projects like Landman and Tulsa King. Those are all on top of his movies.

As a producer and creator, Sheridan is one of the most successful in the business right now. That said, what’s often overlooked is an aspect of his career that he hasn’t leaned on as much in recent years — being an actor. He actually started his Hollywood journey in acting, appearing in projects like Veronica Mars, Texas Ranger, and Sons of Anarchy. Now, he is best known for the Yellowstone franchise, as well as his other small screen projects, but his experiences as a working actor also deserve some attention.

In his latest appearance in The Howard Stern Show, Sheridan looked back at that time in his life, including a particular moment where he had an altercation with a fellow actor. He recalled punching him after being interrupted during an audition process. He walked away from it assuming that he had lost the job, only to realize that he had actually landed it.

I told him I was gonna. I’m like, “Look, if you interrupt me again, I’m going to knock you the f–k out,” and he looked at me like I was nuts. Then he kept talking, and I was just sitting on the couch kind of like this, and I just went pop, and then I knew this is over. So, I said, “Well, I guess this ain’t the job for me. Thank everyone very much.” I got up and I walked out and this dude’s like, “What the hell was that?” And I left. I went back to the talent agency. They walk in and they say, “Congratulations.” And I’m like, “Congratulations?” They said, “You got it.” I said, “I got what?” They said, “You got the job.” So, I went to the job, which by the way, it involved absolutely no skill whatsoever. So, my character’s job, what I do is I’m walking through a Montgomery Wards in the furniture section and I see a couch, and I kind of test out this couch. I sit on it and bounce on it, and then cut to I’ve now purchased this couch and moved it into my inexplicably large loft. I’m sprawled out on my new couch and my favorite football team scores a touchdown and I go, “Yay!” and I spill popcorn everywhere and that’s supposed to sell couches. So, you take a break between filming, they’re turning the cameras around, and I walk outside to smoke a cigarette, and there’s this dude. I still remember, he’s wearing a baseball cap, like a Chicago White Sox baseball cap, a sport coat, and jeans and tennis shoes, and just that whole combination fascinated me. I said, “So, what do you do? You like a camera guy or something?” And he looks at me and he just laughs. He just can’t stop laughing when he looks at me and he goes, “I’m the executive producer. I’m the one who hired you,” and I said, “I was kind of curious about that. Why did you do that?” and hoping for, “Well, you’ve got it, kid. You’re just so charismatic. You’re a movie star. I could just tell when you walked in,” and he starts laughing. He said, you told that guy you were going to hit him, and then you hit him and it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched it 50 times.

The last time Sheridan acted on a show that he wasn’t creatively involved with was in 2011’s NCIS: Los Angeles as Navy Captain Jennings for just a single episode. Since then, his roles on the small screen have been tied to his properties, appearing as Travis Wheatley in Yellowstone, Charles Goodnight in 1883, and Cody Spears in Lioness. On the big screen, he was recently in 2018’s 12 Strong as Brian and for a cameo in 2016’s Hell or High Water.

It doesn’t seem like Sheridan has any acting gig lined up, at least not officially. However, just because he isn’t appearing in front of the camera, doesn’t mean that he is not involved in a few projects. Aside from being an executive producer for several of his properties, he also launched his latest fresh property this year in Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s The Madison.

Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan Is Finally Telling The Yellowstone Story That Everyone Wants With Dutton Ranch

Kayce’s Marshals is a hit, but it isn’t the best Yellowstone story that needs to be told. Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan is finally doing it.

Still, it would be interesting to see Taylor Sheridan come back to acting. Granted that he can easily have a cameo in any of his ongoing projects, it would be curious to see him be at the forefront of a new project. Whether that’s in his plans or not is uncertain, and will be entirely up to him.
