Releasing way back in 1997, the very first Fallout installment marked the beginning of a franchise that would take the video game industry by storm. Originally developed and published by Interplay Productions, the series was soon handed over to Bethesda when it acquired licensing rights from the original team back in 2004. However, it was in 2007 that Bethesda officially purchased the Fallout IP for a whopping $5.75 million.
Since then, and with Fallout 3 being the first title under the Bethesda banner, the post-apocalyptic franchise has been hit or miss, with titles such as Fallout: New Vegas being considered one of the best video games of all time, whilst the newer Fallout 4 left a lot to be desired for many fans.
Now, whilst we all wait for the launch of Fallout 5, which has not yet received a public announcement or news of full development, it seems as though yet another Fallout spin-off game is gaining traction.
First released back in 2015, Fallout Shelter is a free-to-play construction and management simulation game where players are tasked with creating the perfect vault under 2,000 feet of bedrock.
Create a brighter future…underground! Take on your role as Overseer in this base builder and post-apocalyptic simulation from the Fallout franchise. Build a base and create the perfect vault under 2,000 feet of bedrock. Manage your Dwellers, explore the hostile Wasteland, and survive against radioactive threats.
Fallout: Shelter gameplay consists of making your Dwellers happy as you expand your vault, make specialized equipment and gear, help them find jobs, and even train them to wield their very own S.P.E.C.I.A.L. abilities. However, with your vault needing to flourish, you can also help with matchmaking in order to keep that repopulation up, if you know what I mean.
Since its launch over a decade ago, Fallout Shelter has remained a constant companion to many Fallout fans, especially as it supports Android and iOS play, and now, it is back with another season titled Synthetic Identity.
Announced on the official Fallout Twitter/X page, the post reads as follows: “The Institute is here… and so are the Synths! Hold onto your humanity in the latest Fallout Shelter season, “Synthetic Identity,” available now on mobile and Steam.” Alongside a stunning piece of art, it seems as though this latest season, that offers tons of rewards as always, has captured fan’s imagination, and they took to the comments to share their thoughts.
“We’re so hyped for this one,” one user shared. However, others are still using the announcement as an excuse to demand information about the future of the Fallout franchise as a whole. “Bethesda will do literally anything but focus on what the fans actually want,” one user commented. “Bruh, the distance in time between Skyrim and the ES6 announcement trailer is now less time than the distance between the ES6 trailer and now.”
With both Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI seemingly stuck in development, with Bethesda head Todd Howard himself admitting that they were announced too soon, it is no wonder that fans are frustrated. Hopefully, spin-off titles such as Fallout Shelter will be enough to keep them entertained in the meantime.
